The OP ordered a vehicle with roof rails able to perform a certain function. If MG are not able to deliver the same to him then he may well have a case that they are unable to fulfill the contract and he should be refunded his deposit.
OP said Today at 12:43PM>> I didn’t have detailed discussions with the salesman,<<
So if did not mention using a roof rack for bikes then, it's thin ice.
Also I would not want to be using racks when the manufacture has said has a Zero limit. Any issue that cause a ins claim and there is going to be trouble.

It seems many manufactures are not going through as much homologation or type approval on cars. As trying to find a EV that has been approved to tow is a major issue.
Neither did I discuss if it came with paint, tyres, a steering wheel or headlights. They were all clearly illustrated in the brochure.
Once you find your ev that tows would you be happy for the manufacturer to change the spec before taking delivery to no towing allowed, I think not.

Have a look at the Skoda Enyaq, certain specs in some markets are definitely going to be able to tow, Skoda UK were being a bit coy about it a few weeks ago. On some social media I didn’t think they really knew what they were taking from the range, ie not taking the 55kWh version.

They are also basic requirements for type approval. Roof rails aren't.

A question... If you hadn't discovered this until after you took delivery, would you be trying to return the car?

Towing capacity requires specific type approval.

It's UNECE-wide approval, so if it's homologated for any UNECE market, that'll apply in the UK - and, no, it's not affected by Brexit, because the UK isn't leaving the UN.

I don't believe there's any such equivalent for roof rails.

Adrian what do you actually think I should do?
I’m I in the same category as the customer that finds their 10 year old Fiesta needs a new wheel bearing after six months of ownership and won’t accept that the dealer won’t return their PX and refund the cost of the car plus compensation?

Would I reject the car after purchase? I would want to, then it would depend on how long I had had it and how many miles I had done. I accept it’s difficult to unwind a car purchase in an equitable way for the dealer or customer.

My underlining ... how is a reduction in rating from 50Kg to 0Kg an improvement? ;)
I think the "improvement" is from the manufacturers point of view- less chance of litigation if they snap off in this case.

I find that most "improvements" are what I would call a downgrade, the MK1 of anything is always the best built mechanically & electrically, then the "continual improvements" make them cheaper to produce.

E.g. the spare wheel. Our Mk1 Carlton had 5 alloy wheels. The replacement had 4 and a full size steel spare, same as my Corsa. the facelift corsa got one of those silly pram wheels, the next iteration got a can of gloop.  From my point of view they are not improvements, as in "better", but I'm sure Vauxhall thought they were :)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

What I think you should do is irrelevant.
The question is what the terms and conditions of your contract allow you to do.

Until you can check that, we're just chatting about hypotheticals.

Right now, you have two prioirities.
    1. To stop the car arriving and you needing to pay the balance of the purchase price.
    2. To get your £500 back.

2 is, I'm sure you agree, minor in comparison.

What comeback do you think the consumer would have in that situation? Clue: Precisely zero. There would be no onus on the retailer to even pay for the wheelbearing. It's a consumable, and it would be eminently reasonable for one to fail on a 10yo car.

I think you'd have an easy enough case in a court that you bought a car with the intention of carrying bikes on it (by even just showing a receipt for a bike prior to the order).
Your first port of call is to talk to the dealership - they may just refund you and then you're sorted.

Thanks for bringing this up though, I was really tempted by the MG5 EV but I need it to be able to take bikes somewhere.

First thing to do is speak to the dealer. At least then you'll know where you stand. Nobody on here can tell you what they will say.

If they are unhelpful .. people can then suggest action you can take.

The problem is Adrian is that I value your opinion so it’s not irrelevant, when I read a reply from you I normally think spot on. The wheel bearing example you do offer your opinion on and we agree. You of course will tell me I’m a fool to listen to some bloke (if you are a bloke) off the internet.

That's a good outcome, and thankyou for providing the update.
Maybe it was easier for the dealer to provide that outcome for a type of vehicle that is popular (and maybe even has a waiting list), but the customer service will also endear you to the brand in the future.  Very important for a brand that is still rebuilding reputation.
