My ex-friend paid me back!

I tend to think how much I value the friendship and on the assumption it's a gift rather than a loan.
I recently loaned a dear friend £5k and decided that I'd never bring the subject up again. If I got it back, great, if not that'd be OK too.
I also decided against loaning a much smaller amount to another friend/acquaintance as, frankly, the money meant more to me!
Like everything else in life, there's rarely a "one sized fits all answer" so when it comes to money and friends, all I can say is trust your own instincts and don't allow anyone to manipulate your kindness.2 -
Learned this lesson a while ago. Never loan money to friends. Always see it as a gift that way it doesn’t turn sour. Nice to hear you got it back though.2

So glad you got your money back. I have a few "work friends" who owe me between £10 and £100 but I find it too awkward to bring it up. I've now learnt not to let them borrow money and just make an excuse up!
I have another work friend who writes everything down and will even go after 50p if you borrow it off her. I wish I had her guts, lol. She's lovely though and if she borrows anything off you, you know you will get it back as soon as she can return it!6 -
Several decades ago, there was an office colleague who was always broke and would borrow small amounts during the week. Every Thursday (we were paid in cash weekly) he would go round and pay everyone back. On Monday, he would start again...
At least we got to see our money in passing...
And, to be fair, he was very helpful to colleagues when anyone had a problem and cleared all his debts when he left for another job.3 -
Dude I'm happy for you, unfortunately such cases happen very rarely. My friend hasn't been able to repay his debt to me for over a year

I have a happier tale; a very long-standing friend of my husband asked to borrow £500 as he needed to put down a deposit on a car, and didn't have the cash available. I duly lent him the money; he was honest about the fact that it would be several months before he could repay me, I said that was ok. When he finally did repay me, about six months later, he insisted on adding on the interest I'd have earned if it had been in my savings account, plus a bit more as a thank you.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)5 -
I must admit that the few times I've loaned money that has not been repaid has been a good lesson about "friends".
My husband had a friend who frankly I hated, he was a creep. When he split up with his wife he borrowed £1000 from us to get him back on his feet, he never paid us back, we never saw him again and I didn't have to have hubby's creepy friend to stay anymore.0 -
