Are there pluses and minuses to using a split system rather than two single units?

If I understand... 1 external box.. 2 distribution inside, more powerful external box.... 3-4 internal.
2 single units (i think) would require 2 external units...

A split system feeding two internal units may be more expensive, but possibly gets cheaper if feeding 3+.
A split system may need a dedicated power supply, rather than just plugging it into a socket. [But two separate units could also be an issue if they are to be plugged into the same ring main. Don't ask me why, I don't know.]
A split system will mean less servicing.
    Probably lots more +'s & -'s

I agree 2 external boxes but it might still be cheaper and easier to install and give you more flexibility as Martin says

Same here, you'd assume cheaper, but you may incur additional leccy install costs (for the 'special' wiring) additional piping costs, as one of the indoor units will presumably be a bit further away, and the split systems do seem to have a bit of a cost jump v's a simple outdoor unit.

Micky, would you mind posting some specs/prices and even pics?  I'm very interested in this sort of heating.

Only had it on for a few mins.. been quite warm today so just the usual GCH.  It is certainly "instant" heat so it  takes the chill of the room very quickly.  Actually have a few kW of electricity spare this evening as batteries fully charged this afternoon so may run it for a short time ;)
