Kia Ceed? I've just bought a 2013 Ceed estate with the 1.6 CRDI engine and £30 road tax. Excellent mpg, not dropped below 55mpg in two months. It's available in a hatchback and an estate, I think there's two petrol and two diesel engines. The Hyundai i30 is almost identical, sister company. Owner reviews were excellent and a huge bonus is that there's no bl00dy dual mass flywheel or cam belt on mine!

After suggestions here she's found a 2010 Golf 1.4 TSI. She's enquiring about test drive availability so we shall see what happens.

I'd be very wary of  7 year old diesel just out of manufacturer warranty. There could be some hefty maintenance bills coming up.
