What's the difference between an Octavia and Superb? I've seen a few out and think oh that's an Octavia and then see the badge and it says Superb. I always thought it was a form of Octavia.
They're different models within the Skoda range. The Superb is bigger/better equipped/more expensive.
Underneath, the Superb is more "Passat", while the Octavia is more "Golf" - but with the current versions, all four are based on the same MQB platform and engine range.

Are they a bit easy to confuse? Yes. Some might say it was "consistent branding and styling"...

I would expect any VAG car that uses the 1.4 'TSI' engine to have more than enough performance. Never driven one but purely based on the paper figures for power/performance.
I've got a Golf 1.4TSI and it's lovely to drive, though I had to learn to lighten my right foot as it really wants to go. High 40s-mid 50s mpg (I'm mostly urban, some A roads and occasional motorways) and compared to the other 1.4l engined-cars I test-drove there's a lot more power behind it.

The 1.4 VAG engine is a peach, I am on my 2nd. The first one in an Octavia was 122hp and performed almost the same as my previous 2 ltr diesel. The Octavia is not "too big", but the boot / hatchback is massive. Also gave around 45mpg which was about the same as my previous diesel. NB If you are going for an early car avoid the twin turbo version as they are not reliable.

Beat me to it. I was going to say if an Octavia is too big then have a look at a Fabia or even a Fabia estate if she needs a bigger boot. Decent choice of engines and cheap to service and maintain.

My nephew who is 6'7 has a Fabia and he gets on fine with it....although with the seat right back as far as it will go.

I own a Skoda Octavia 1.4 Elegance. For a 1.4 it is brilliant compared to my Passat 1.6 FSi. Biggest thing for me is manual handbrake. The Passat was good but got stung with the calipers, not forking out that kind of money again. Lower road tax at £165 for the year. Nice big boot and lovely car to drive.
  • Sounds like i should take a look at these 1.4 engines for her and see what's being said. Wonder if she can get much for the budget or whether the suggestion has been put forward without consideration for budget. Will have to have a see.
    Thanks.

The Superb is a class bigger and higher spec, but unless you saw them side by side you'd be hard to tell the difference from outside.

  • How about a Hyundai i30?  We currently own a 12 plate and it has given us years of reliable and very comfortable driving.  Just remember to get it serviced at your friendly local garage as Hyundai servicing costs are expensive.
