The Octavia seems a heavy thing. Does the 1.4 have enough go? At work so don't really have the time until later to go checking.

The Golf would be fair enough though what engine really? Have had experience of the older 1.4s and the 1.6 and they're gutless and awful economy for what they are. The 1.9 I've had experience of was fine enough but it's a diesel and she's against that now. No experience of the modern ones and by modern I mean MK6 onwards so I don't know if any of them fit the bill.

Out of curiosity do any of you have experience of the Civic? Are they fairly reliable? Have no experience or any Honda at all myself.
I would expect any VAG car that uses the 1.4 'TSI' engine to have more than enough performance. Never driven one but purely based on the paper figures for power/performance.
Honda engines are generally bulletproof if maintained/serviced though maybe slightly lethargic being a petrol n/a engine..fine with a manual but with an auto will be sluggish. Saying that if you want reliability and aren't trying to win the traffic grand Prix then a Civic or Jazz would be a solid bet and both v practical.

The Octavia is a Golf. Just with a fatter backside and cheaper materials/lower spec.
  • I've always thought of the Octavia as the equivalent to the Passat. 🤷‍♂️

    Superb
  • I'm well aware that VW, Seat, Skoda etc are essentially the same yet at the same time not. Though like WD said, I took the Octavia as a Passat. Maybe due to their shaping. Obviously we were wrong.
Again maybe due to the dimensions of it, I expected the Octavia to be much heavier and therefore slower. Perhaps wrong on this front also.

I'll put the Jazz to her and see what she says. Surprising about the boot comment. That's a plus.

And yes, she'll be getting rid of her current Golf. I'm well aware some would keep throwing 100s and 100s at it replacing absolutely everything but she said enough is enough which is fair enough.

Nissan Almera. The sort of forgotten car in this market, but this is more of a marketing/sentiment problem - there was never anything wrong with the car.

My Mum has a Jazz.  Compared to a Focus / Golf, it's a massive disappointment

I'm glad you like my post so much! ;) 😂

Thanks ... I always forget about that one. :)
  • What's the difference between an Octavia and Superb? I've seen a few out and think oh that's an Octavia and then see the badge and it says Superb. I always thought it was a form of Octavia.

OK gearboxes. Does it really matter.
Depends whether you intend your car to be powered by the engine or the gearbox.  I will stick to the novel idea of using the engine.  Let me know how you get on with the gearbox and no engine...
