Do you have enough of your "own" funds in that account, if the bank recall the money, not to put you overdrawn?

I wouldn't touch it if I were you, until you're sure where it's come from and it is actually yours.
The money can not be removed from the account without the OP approval. Even if it was a payment made in error/fraud.

Page 53 of the Barclays T&Cs state otherwise. AFAIK, this is standard for all banks.

Remember the postal service is running slowly at the moment. Correspondence may well be on the way.

Wouldn't of touched it at all.
Now you've moved it, and acknowledged it you could be seen as part of a possible scam.

  • I agree that unfortunately moving the money makes it look suspicious in any subsequent investigation. I wouldn’t have touched it

Do let us know how you get on once you've spoken to Barclays - I wouldn't have touched it either until I knew what it was.

Really? I wouldn’t have touched it either as it makes life more complicated, but I’m not sure that it makes it more suspicious by moving the funds within Barclays to ring fence unknown funds, and at the same time telling Barclays about it.

I would have thought that not touching the money and notifying the bank is the only course of action guaranteed not to cause you trouble.

Anything else surely opens the door to query or suspicion.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Well if they do then given the rules on O/D charges. You have to get a warning you are going to be overdrawn & incur charges.
Strangely enough. This will give the OP time to move it back.
This was my thinking. I am pretty much checking my account hourly for any transactions or dodgy payments. I will move money accordingly if there is. There hasn't been any more transactions since the money was paid in.

Spoke to Barclays on Saturday and explained. But they said the complaint and refunds were handled by another department completely (regarding my packaged bank account claim with Resolver) but said it didn't look suspicious. I will just wait and see. Genuinely starting to think this may be a refund from Barclays.

This appears to be contrary to claims that banks are not able to recover payments made to incorrect accounts.
