Argos Faulty Laptop Bought in March

Hi,
Need some advice, bought a laptop in store from Argos at the end of March and one of the keys has fallen off . My husband has lost the receipt however the transaction appears on our credit card statement. Argos customer service are claiming that although my bank statement is proof of purchase they need the receipt for the order number. According to their terms and conditions they are liable to repair or replace a faulty product if it is under a year old. What should I do? This is a £400 laptop

A receipt isn't necessary, a credit card statement is sufficient evidence to exercise your consumer rights. Are you claiming under warranty, though? If so, and if the terms of the warranty require an order number then that's why they're asking.
Have you got the key or is it lost? In my experience, keys can just be clicked back into place easily. I occasionally remove mine to give the keyboard a clean.2 -
Presumably Argos are referring to their warranty conditions and as such they are quite right that they can impose whatever conditions they choose, such as asking for an original receipt. However, these do not override your statutory consumer rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The problem you do have though is that after 6 months the onus is now on you to prove that any fault is inherent to manufacture rather than, for example excess wear & tear, user misuse, accidental damage etc, and this you may find hard to do for something like a key coming loose from a keyboard.
It will be worth mentioning to Argos that under the CRA you're only required to present proof of purchase rather than specifically a receipt and you want to exercise your rights for a suitable remedy to see what they come back with, you never know.0 -
Did they email you a copy of the receipt when you bought the laptop?0

Any of these:
- till/kiosk receipt
- confirmation email
- e-receipt
- your order number
If you can’t find one of the above, don’t worry. We should be able to sort everything out if you have:
- your card/bank statement
- the email address used to buy your item

Someone did mention it - but you have tried to see if the key will click back into place with a bit of jiggling? On many keyboards they are designed to detach and be reattached for cleaning. Hard to know for certain if yours is one without seeing it - but if it does click firmly back into place with a little jiggle, that might resolve the need to find the receipt in the first place. If however it doesn't - then yes I'd be pointing out their own terms and conditions, armed with the proof you have to be able to resolve the problem.0

Did the OP buy in store, in the old fashioned way, or use one of the reserve in advance services? If the latter, they usually send a confirmation text or email and receipt - that might suffice if it can be found electronically. Check the junk e-mail folder.0
