I have to apologise to you and all the other posters for the confusion I caused. Yes I meant the charger as in the "subject" and my second paragraph.

I remember the salesperson showing me the pin type "lead" and the slot on the phone into which it goes, so I was devastated when I saw the USB lead which I was told previously is for "data" not for charging phones.

However this charger has the USB lead at one end, which plugs into the phone and an Alcatel plug (a Euro plug called a Travel charger written on it) at the other end; there is no other slot from the phone to attach to my pc.

Before I go ahead can you please confirm this set-up is OK to proceed for charging?

Just a PS: I mistakenly posted the above in the grey area which probably prompted the warning “Body 1 character too short”

macman has since confirmed it was OK to proceed with the USB plug - which succeded.

Thanks macman for your advice which worked - took a few hours. I have been able to fill in a few of my details but might have to get back for further help as this is the first type of phone I have acquired.  Thanks again.
