Nope it means Multi Function Card and applies to all of Santander’s debit cards.

Yes it’s just Santander’s term for a debit card that can be used for purchases in shops, hotels pubs and such like or for online purchases or cash withdrawals which equates to the Multi Function Of the card (MFC).

  • Is the switch to Mastercard the reason why my card lasts 1 year and 7 months which just seems a bit random to me?

They will not want to switch too many people over at once.
Covid has caused a lot of background issues with training for staff on the new cards. So they have to limit the number of M/C going out to the number of staff trained.
Also they will want to make sure that all the background systems are working as they should. As Visa & Mastercard use different background systems for many tasks.

When debit cards first came out, many banks had their own names for them, -they weren't just called debit cards like they are now.  Barclays (which was the first) had Connect.  NatWest had Servicecard.  Multifunction Card is the old Abbey National Name.

I believe Santander have 3 types of debit cards

    "DEBIT MFC" Offline Authorisation

    Visa Debit 4547
    Debit Mastercard 535666

"DEBIT MFC ONLINE" Online Authorisation (Issued to customers who don't meet the internal BS threshold for a standard DEBIT MFC)

    Visa Debit 4757
    Debit Mastercard 535667

"DEBIT MFC ONLINE YOUTH" Issued on 123 mini accounts

    Visa Debit 4757
    Debit Mastercard 535667

The BIN range for Santander Debit Mastercards is 535666 and 535667, so I would make a good guess that 66 is the offline variant (DEBIT MFC) while 67 is online (DEBIT MFC ONLINE, DEBIT MFC ONLINE YOUTH).

Mine says DEBIT MFC YOUTH and is a student account.
Might be obvious, but what does BIN range mean?
