there is a website called kettlecookery.com - tells you how to safely cook an egg, hot dog sausages and pasta in a kettle. At this time of year, butter would be OK in his room and with long life bread things like a tin of tuna and a sliced tomato would be a good option. Muesli can be a high energy food, and long-life milk in pint cartons - half with his muesli and half in tea/coffee or added to cup a soup type drinks would mean he could probably use a pint in a day so a fridge wouldn't be so important this time of year. I think I'd be staying up to have the breakfast as 'supper' before bed!

Surely if his company have set him to work away they offer a daily allowance for food?

Cafes, supermarkets, shops pubs etc etc all sell food some of them even offer it ready cooked, is he pocketing the cash and making you feel sorry for him?
He doesn't work for a company so doubt that he is pocketing the cash to make me feel sorry for him.
The suggestions are really helpful and I'll mention them to him.
I know the room is nothing special but serves it's purpose as it seems to be all bed and work at the minute.
He'll have done his driving test soon so getting about will be a bit easier and then getting to the shops etc won't be a problem.
Don't know why I didn't think of the slow cooker cos I use mine loads.

Has anyone got ideas for hot food that can be made with a kettle only? My daughter has to go to hospital soon, we have told it could be 24 hours but it could be anything up to a week maybe longer. We went before and there was no canteen just a small room with a fridge (for whole ward) and a kettle. So most meals were in local cafes. So I'm thinking I take a few things with us for me. So looking for suggestions for any food and snacks. Not too fussy on things so anything is a possible.
I'm thinking cuppa soup, bread rolls, crackers, pot noodle type of things. Easy to take and carry with our clothes. Hospital is about 4 hours away by public transport so no option to come home.
And of course with money saving in mind!
    Thanks
  • Don't buy pot noodles, buy the 3 minute 14p noodles, and make up a sauce mix with gravy granules; curry powder, tomato puree etc; and when you have poured your boiling water over the noodles, pour some more over the granules mix to make the sauce, then drain the noodles, pour into the gravy, stir and eat/serve.

Also just make pack up meals like you would for a lunch, with lots of salads.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • The 99p shop has pot type noodles in packs of 3. I looked at them last week as OH's canteen was shut and he had the same kettle only dilemma. I bought him some vending machine type cups of Knorr chicken soup and Bovril too.

Instant mash is a good kettle staple too-perhaps mixed with cheese, or chopped up chicken?

Not exactly Gourmet stuff, but it will keep the wolf from the door!

Hope your your daughter gets well soon.

Cous cous can be made with a kettle so maybe cous cous & salad. You can buy chip shop curry sauce (bisto) and add cooked chicken and have with a bread roll?

The £1 shop had 3 mug shots for £1 they were 75p each in sainsbury you empty the pack into a mug add hot water leave for 5 mns they had sweet and sour noddles, cheese pasta, tomato pasta and chicken flavour needs to be a large mug or do half in 1 mug half in another. May need bread with it as its not that filling.
