Healthy-ish meals made with a kettle?

Thanks for the suggestions, more are welcome.
She'll have the hospital food, hopefully! Just snacks, the tests they are doing should mean she's free to eat most of time. Although there's always the chance they change the tests or add to them. If so we'll both be Nil by mouth!
Any suggestions for breakfast as this hopital provide nothing for parents from what has been said.
Got a couple of the mug shots in the cupboard, not used yet, so thanks for the tips, never thought about them.0 -
Home Bargains do porridge in a pot, that you just add hot water to. You can get them in other supermarkets but they are dearer. You can chop up some dried fruit and add it if you get bored.0

Aldi do some really tasty cup shotz for about 39p each or so. I can also recommend the ainsley harriot brand of cup-a-soups - have always hated them before but those ones actually taste as good as they smell. Our local asda had them on offer for 50p per box this week.
Oat-so-simple do a porridge pot that just takes boiling water I think, for breakfast.0 -

I'm sure I saw some of those porridge in a pots in Aldi last week. Can you use the fridge for milk-if so you could take muesli. If you can use the fridge take a marker pen so you can write your name on the milk-it would be very annoying if it disappeared before you could use it.0

Fresh egg ( in shell or not) into a Mug, add boiling water, leave to cook for ??? minutes.
Not tried this, experiment at home for timing.
Maybe even a timing for soft boiled egg for egg & soldiers ?
I'll try this for my own benefit when the Snow goes, could be fun.Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, And Today is a Gift, That's Why it's Called The Present

Pot Noodles have a bad reputation, but they have soya protein in them, which ordinary noodles won't have. (Therefore possibly more filling/more nutritious?)
Do they have foods for camping that can be re-constituted with boiling water?0 -
jeez - you would think they would have a microwave at least! but, most posters have already suggested what I would suggest.
I know that you can get instant mash pots from Aldi - havent tried them myself tho!
take some finger rolls and hot dog sausages - they warm up quite quickly if placed in boiling water.
I wouldnt worry too much about 'nutritious' meals - its only for a very short period and the important thing is not to go hungry! if thats filling up on junk - then it will do no harm long term!0 -
Could you buy/borrow a food flask then you could take a stew or sausages and beans, soup etc?
or how about something like a (chilled) tub of cooked pasta with whatever veg/meat etc in and take a packet of cheese sauce(or other packet sauce) and make it up in a mug and pour over the pasta? It wouldn't be boiling hot but would be warm at least.
you could also take in something that you wouldn't mind eating cold like apple pie or crumble say and a packet mix of custard and again make up with boiling water in a mug and pour over.

just had another thought - not sure if it would work. I often cook potatoes/rice/pasta by boiling water (in the pan or using a kettle) first then turning off the heat and leaving the lid on and they all cook fine. What I do though is make sure the water is boiling in the pan but I guess if you pour boiling water from a kettle immediately into a pan and bung the lid on immediately - in theory it should still work. You could pre-warm the pan first with some boiling water, put the lid on and then boil enough to cook with.
You would just need something to go with the hot food - that might need to be cold but maybe make up a packet sauce that just needs boiling water mixed in and that would make the meal hotter.
Or could you carry a small sandwich maker if you have one or a toaster with those toast pocket things - might be a faff on public transport but toasted sandwiches would warm you up.
good luck to you and your daughter
