    Breadsticks and philly cheese
    Fruit
    Brazil nuts
    oat crackers
instant soup and couscous (ainsley harriot)

DD has had 23 surgeries starting from when she was 2 years old. I am not usually a sweet eater, but I would always make sure I had a bag when going into hospital - if just for the energy. You may be surprised how you lose your appetite.

Depending on how old she is you may get permission to take her with you to the canteen. Once DD was about 9-10 they let me wheel her about in a wheelchair, she appreciated the change of scenery. At one particular university hospital if parents were staying longer than 12 hours they also got subsidized prices in the canteen, this was a big university hospital though - not sure it that's everywhere so might be worth asking.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

  • Good luck to your daughter. I think all of my suggestions have already been said but one word of advice - if you leave anything in the fridge please label it. From past experience things do go walkies from hospital fridges, and not just the milk. Your hospital may be fine but I've always had a bad experience at my local childrens ward :(
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:
  • Thanks for this thread coolcats, DH works away from home and I've been trying to think up kettle food for him other than cuppa soups and pot noodles!
  • are you positive there's no canteen there you can use? Most hospitals have one as the staff have to eat somewhere and are working 24 hours a day. It may be possible for family/patients to use it too?

I spent a lot of time at my local hospital a few years ago and it seemed that the only catering available was a high street coffee shop in the reception area (expensive!).

then one day I found a funny little sign on a wall - just a notice printed off a PC - that seemed to be about food but without being really obvious. I followed the signs and found a lovely little canteen down in the basement. Once you were there the signs made it obvious it was open to everyone, not just staff, and I also double checked with the person serving. Yes, patients were welcome. I never saw another patient in there though, only staff in uniforms...so it is the hospital's best kept secret. Nice food, very cheap.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • The Heinz tomato soup pouches are very good.

If you have a hot drink, soup or suchlike, the rest of the meal can be cold.

Plus you could put things in widenecked flasks.

Hope all goes well for you both.

Son's dad said there wasn't when we went before. I never asked or explored to find out though, sort of thing his dad wouldn't do. I did read the bedside folder for the stay and it didn't mention a canteen, said about local shops etc. There is a small shop in the entrance they sell few bits but very expensive, also not open that much. Just figure if I have a few bits even if there is a canteen they can come home again, and if there's a day I can't get out it won't be an issue.

I make my own instant porridge:

1/2 cup of oats (value are fine)
    2 tbsp dried milk powder
1/2 tsp sugar (more if you like it sweet)

Just add boiling water and stir. It thickens on standing so add a bit more water if necessary. You can add flavourings after mixing - cinnamon, honey, dried fruit etc.

OP, I thought of you today when I sold one of these at a car boot sale:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pasta-Magic/dp/B000H9HS2M
Was at the end of the sale, and sold it for 10p!

We used it about once. It just about worked, but not very well. There is no way I'd use it over a saucepan on a hob. Which is why we got rid of it.
But it worked well enough to be better than nothing...

Thansk for all the replys got a few good ideas now ready for when we go. Hopefully it will only be a few days, but if longer we can find the local shop and cope. Will take as much as I can carry for the first few days.
