I've slightly lost track of the original question but if it's about receiving occasional text messages from banks, containing passwords etc,  I have a virtual mobile number obtained from Andrews and Arnold. It costs just over a pound a month and when a text or voicemail comes in it gets forwarded to me by email.

That reminds me. I used TextMe for a while to send sms over wifi, I guess something like that could be used to receive messages sent to a UK mobile number? Just had a quick search and hushed came up as a possibility.

As a virtual uk phone number.  I don't know whether you have to be in the UK for it to work, or whether you can set it up and then connect anywhere in the world through WiFi.

ASAIK, you can be anywhere and use your UK virtual number but you have to have a regular mobile number calling plan to use it outside of a wifi location.
But you are not tied to a particular country with a VOIP number, that's the beauty of it.

One day, it will be the norm to have a mobile phone number, free of any country, free of any carrier, free of any particular handset and we'll be able to change our plans and options, on the fly, to any operator in the world, at any time.
