SIM credit that does not expire
Comments

All networks require you to make a 'chargeable event' at least every 180 days to keep the sim active (outgoing text or call). As long as you do that the credit (and sim) won't expire.

You can pickup a SIM card for the main networks from the checkouts in Iceland Stores, unlike may places, they are free with any purchase. Top up with £5 at a newsagent.
Sadly, the low cost O2 “Classic” and Three “123”, 3p per min, 2p per text and 1p per Mb PAYG tariffs are no longer available to new customers. On those a test call, costing 3p, every month meant a £10 top up could last 20+ years!1 -
Thanks. So Iceland Stores are an option. Any others that fit the bill?

For occasional use, Asda Mobile (uses EE) and Giff Gaff (uses O2) have low per-call or per-text rates. Vodafone's Pay As You Go 1 is capped at £1 per day of use but the individual call/text rate is higher.0
