Seems to be more frequent a newbie 1st time poster, short, medium or long rant and never to be seen again. But to join in, if you are youngish driver, want a brand new car, are disciplined and able to stick to the rules then the finances can make sense.

Excess mileage rate is usually far higher than that - at least double.

So if you doubled the mileage you would pay 4.2 x 18000 = £756 after 3 years
Am I the only one who thinks this is reasonable?
Or, to put it another way, another £21/mo on the monthlies.

    Seems very reasonable to me.

If that's the excess cost over 3 years - that would seem a fair 'additional' depreciation contribution to the car having less value due to its higher mileage. The agreement for 6k a year would assume a value of £X amount based on a total mileage of 18k when the user returned the vehicle - if the user had done 36k miles instead - the value of the car would be lower, which is why the excess mileage charges are in fact charged. Not because they use it as a money making excuse to charge more. (Some excess mileage charges are much higher though - and then you might question the drop in value versus the costs claimed - but in this case - at those rates - it does seem fair - even if we don't know the exact model of Peugeot involved).

I was referring in general terms, and with reference to leases really.  Looking at an online lease company found through a popular internet search engine, Peugeot 208 1.2 Puretech Active Premium, 3 years, 8k miles / year, 6+36 personal lease, excess mileage charge 18 pence / mile (inc VAT).  Extortionate!

Yeah but for the "Just add fuel" which is what the OP is referring to is 4.2p per mile so what you are saying is irrelevant!
  • Huh? Why are you arguing? Grumpy_chap is simply remarking that 4.2p per mile is unusually cheap, so the OP has no real complaint.
