If a "call" is started over any app-based method (Facetime, Messenger, WhatsApp), the mobile network is carrying it as a data session (and charging accordingly) - it's technically impossible to switch that to a mobile-originated call mid-call.
If a call is originated using VoWiFi facilities (WiFi-calling), that can and will seamlessly switch to VoLTE (4G-calling) mid-call providing the network and the phone support the facility. The network operator will bill such calls as per your voice call tariff.

I was notified by my mobile phone company that there is a £220 charge for ringing my son abroad on an international call. I was using Facetime audio at the time over a secure wifi  connection. I have since learned that if the person I am calling WIFI drops I can be charged for an international call on my mobile phone network. The phone company have offered to reduce the bill to £110. I had no idea this was happening and was not even aware that this could occur. I believe this is very unfair charges by the phone company as there is little or no warnings that this is something that you can be charged to your mobile phone bill.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Prove it, show us the bill.

yes, too much confused info here, we need to see a bill showing what the £220 is allocated to, if it as they say is a international call, it will match up with a telephone number.
otherwise, did u have no data allowance left and then get charged per meg for data use for the facetime call? this is a data only service, same as skype or a facebook or whatsapp call. Not a dialed voice call service.
without seeing the bill entries, we cant answer and neither can you at moment as you dont know what your on about either lol. dunno why 1g/2g/3g etc mas mentioned, that just muddied the water adding more confusion to post.

Looks like the OP has disappeared so we shall never know.
  • I do remember a while back I was always using the Facetime audio and video options.
normally using a IPAD via Wi-fi at home...in the iPad I had a sim from 3 that had the 200mb free ( mainly used for the freebies on Wuntu )....when wondering the house on FaceTime I could wonder out of the house ( beyond the Wi-fi limit ) and the call was still be useable...assuming the call transferred to the sim data ?

Is this what could have happened with the OP

    thanks
