I think £28 is a very good amount for a weekly food shop, Couldsavemore, so don't be too hard on yourself. Back when we were debt-busting, it was meal planning which made the biggest difference to us, as we already cooked from scratch. We finally seem to have got on top of our tendancy to 'frontload' the first grocery shop of the month, as that used to leave us a bit short on the final one & we'd be straying over into the following month's money. We also started being really picky about yellow stickers, prioritising only those items which can be maximised for meals. For instance, last week we bought a pack of lamb mince for 99p because we knew it would do enough shepherd's pie for 2 days plus if I skim off 100g of it for the freezer, that's all I need to make tamale pie for two people. It can be tempting though, that first shop of the month if you felt a bit restrained on the final shop of the previous month's budget, can't it?

How do you make your tamale pie @foxgloves?  Always looking for different ways to use mince!

Spicy mince base with plenty of chilli, peppers, onions, tinned chopped tomatoes, etc, on the bottom of the dish, then corn bread mixture beaten up & dolloped across the top followed by about 30 - 35 mins in the oven at Gas 6. Filling tasty meal for two from just 100g of any mince. Have made with Quorn, turkey, lamb, pork & beef.

  • @foxgloves..
thanks, its nice to know I'm not the first to over spend week 1.
This year I really want to pay off my cc and overdraft and build up my savings!
January's food budget is done now and I got to put £35 into the spare cash tin.
Fingers crossed for being sensible this month!

I guess your Clio will be from when they were small. They seem to have grown over the years. I remember when Fiesta'a were the size of the KA.

  • I have realised that I haven't done my end of the month round up of numbers. I'll do them later.
I noticed I over spend at the start of the month... so am pleased that so far this month I've not blown the budget :)
The big start of the month shop £30 down from ladt month £60!
The cat food haul came in under budget, as did filling up the deisel in the car.
Fingers crossed I can keep being good!

  • Just went onto my app to do the overpayment to cc...
    The response from the app
"you might be paying to much, you've already made an overpayment of £50 this month"
Not sure if it's feeling offended by my overpayment or it thinks I forgot and was making a mistake!
Perhaps it thinks I should pay more off.
    I feel judged!

  • I think better that than you need to pay me ha ha  :pensive:
Well done on the shop, especially with all the lockdown madness everyone eating more and at home more.
Any saving is a good saving.
