Yeah I wish the OP would come back and update us.
I don't see how it came to £7k. That sounds like a full-on affair rather a simple direct cremation or even a simple funeral with mouners.

     a pauper's funeral

No such thing as a pauper's funeral.  I think you mean a public health funeral.

Yes, a pauper's funeral. Provided by the state to those who cannot otherwise afford one. The last time I asked it was a direct cremation with no mourners and the cremains were scattered at the crem.

Now called a Public Health Funeral.
Family and friends can usually attend - the council should keep them informed of when the cremation will take place.
Usually held at the less popular times of day.

Interesting. When I asked they said no mourners but maybe that was just that area? As I said I used to be in the office a fair bit when I did the cremation papers - was a good earner.

It can vary from council to council.

A burial is also an option, if for religious reasons.  However, as this won't be in a single plot, it's not possible for family/friends to erect a headstone/permanent memorial.

Its not called a pauper's funeral as that was actually very insulting to the deceased and to anyone mourning them.
