Sky BB SLOW!!!

Options
Hi,

I've just switched from Virgin to Sky and BT.

The BB seems awful. The speed goes from 54.0 to 1.0 and seems to vary alot. I'm on the mid package.

Is there anything I can do to increase the speed (I'm, on wireless) and is this normal??

The speed you quote is nothing to do with your internet connection, its the speed of the wireless link between your PC and your router.
You might try changing the channel you are using to see if that helps.
The first thing to do is see what speed you can get with a wired connection.
Then log into your router and check your router statistics.
Post them here or on www.skyuser.co.uk where you will get lots of help.

  • Hi Penrhyn,

Thanks for your reply, can you tell me how to check the router, or change channel??

It seems to be slow at work too ( I have a work laptop I bring home to use).

    Thanks again :D

Have you established what speed you get when connected via an Ethernet cable? Try here.

These are your router statistics which are in fact very good, they show that your router is synchronising with the exchange at the maximum rate possible for the mid package, that's the downstream speed of 8096kbps.
In fact you could probably go faster if you were to splash out on the max package. (but not yet!)
As expresso says you now need to do a speed test with the router connected via the yellow Ethernet cable, if his link doesn't work you can try http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

The idea is to eliminate any fundamental problems before getting on to the wireless connection.

  • Hi,

Thankyou both for your replies, I will test the ethernet as soon as I can find the lead!! We have builders in at the moment and everything is packed away.

I will have a search at the weekend probably and then post again for your advice.

I keep having to disable and then reactivate which seems to restore speed for a short while...it is v annoying.

Thanks again Penryhn and espresso :T

  • Hi,

Thanks albertross, I have checked and I had an awful lot of automatic connections in my list so have deleted those and will see how it goes.
(It has already gone from 54.0 to 24.0 in the last 2 minutes! Now its on 2.0)
    Signal strength is always excellent.

The aerial is pointing straight up I use my laptop upstairs and in the room next door to the router. Is this the best position?

    Thanks again

  • Hi,

Thanks Albertross I just typed a reply and lost it cos i got an error page again.

I had lots of automatic connection so have deleted those but in the last couple of minutes speed went from 54.0 to 24.0 to 2.0 to 11.0 and then lost it completely.

Could it be anything to do with the bt line? We had an old one reconnected.

The aerial is pointing straight up and I use my laptop upstairs above or in the room next door to the router??

    Thanks again for everyones replies
