Of course they changed the brake fluid. You have absolutely no idea whether they have or not.
You're quite right.  I am not a mechanic.  I don't know if they changed the brake fluid or not.  Maybe they have lied.  Maybe they didn't do the MOT properly either.  Maybe my car is not fit to be on the road.  I don't know.

Probably never been charged for a pollen filter because you have never had it changed.
You could be right.  Maybe my pollen filter is 12 years old.  I don't know.

Main dealers are just garages who have made an agreement with manufacturers.
Well my illusions are well and truly shattered now.  I thought the mechanics were all members of the Toyoda family, and flew in from Japan every week to service my car.

In independent tests main dealers are as lousy as independents.
Perhaps you can link to some evidence of this, but please start your own thread and stop hijacking mine.

Many people prefer to have their car serviced at a Toyota main dealership, instead of using Del Boy under the railway arch near the scrap yard.  Our choice.

I can see that there is a place to discuss the merits of using an independent garage instead of a main dealership, but this is not it.

This thread is about getting a discount if you own an old Toyota, and choose to get it serviced at a main dealership.  Let stay on topic please.

Never mind our 'loveable' Fred.  He never ever has evidence for his rants.  He thinks that everyone should just tinker with their cars whether in or out of warranty and do so by the 'foolproof' method of YouTube instruction videos.  He doesn't think it matters whether rookie people like myself where mechanics are concerned know the difference between someone on YT that actually knows what they are talking about or not.

But Fred is a generous sort.  If people follow his advice and their engine goes 'pop', the will compensate them for following his advice...wait, no actually the has never agreed to do so, mea culpa

That sounds like full price to me.  Log on to the Toyota website to check.

You don't automatically get the 20% discount, you have to sign up for it.  The discount applies to the MOT as well as the service
Thanks.  I'm still awaiting my credentials, having signed up when this thread started.

Should they come soon, I'll check then.  I still have 3 weeks or so before I need to MOT.

    @Roger1

I just checked the Toyota website, using the reg for a 2005 Prius .  £340 is the full price.  It will be £272 if you sign up to the 5+ Club, and you will save about a tenner on the MOT.

You should get an email confirmation when you sign up for the 5+ Club, and the welcome pack should arrive in the post a few days later.  You don't need to wait for the welcome pack, the email should be enough to book your service at a discounted price over the phone if you decide to go with the main dealer.

Many thanks for the comprehensive answer.  All systems go!
(I know there is a Thanks button.  It seems barely adequate and I wanted to make sure you saw my message.)

The only work an intermediate service includes is an engine oil change + a visual inspection. The discounted price of £150 (for my car) is a bit much for an oil change.
Thanks for the link as I have 2 old toyotas. Think I'll pass lol.

    An Intermediate service includes;
    • Replace engine oil & oil filter.
    • Replace windscreen washer fluid.
    • Check all fluid levels & top up as required.
    • Inspect battery for leaks, security of clamps & terminals.
    • Inspect cooling system, hoses & connections.
    • Inspect radiator & condenser for debris & signs of damage.
    • Inspect air filter element.
    • Check wheel nuts for correct torque specifications.
    • Inspect brake pads & discs.
    • Inspect steering wheel, gear & linkages.
    • Inspect for under vehicle and under hood fluid leaks.
    • Inspect tyre condition & inflation pressures.
    • Check brake & clutch pedal travel.
    • Check operation of lights, horns, wipers & washers.
    • Check function of all warning lights.
    • Check seat belts for damage & operation.
    • Check installation of drivers floor mat.
    • Reset OMMS.
    • Carry out wash & vacuum.
    • Carry out visual safety report.
    • Carry out final inspection and road test.
But it's not just an oil change is it?  You are paying for the time of a qualified mechanic and the cost of providing the tools and facilities for him to do the job.  Having waited on site while intermediate services are carried out, I know they can take from 90 minutes to a couple of hours.  £125 for the garage (plus £25 VAT) doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
  • Waiting for Fred to pipe up about the qualifications or otherwise of mechanics.  After all, they didn't graduate from Youtube Uni
