If you've owned a sporty car

  • It was no supercar but good for 150mph and looked boring which was a good thing back in the 90's where
anything with a go-faster stripe got stolen twice a day.

    18mpg on the commute though.

When I worked in Salford back in the day they never got a chance to be stolen twice;...they were always crashed and burned within half an hour of being nicked.

It was a great time to be a car thief. Glory days!  :D

But a 205 1.9 GTi was basically a go-kart with a huge engine and a small body shell - no weight to get moving.
Yes it was basically a go-kart, but so much fun. It also had good road holding, for some reason Peugeot really knew how to make a chassis back in those days. Better than the rubbish they turn out now

We own a Morgan.  I wouldn't call it a sports car but it does mean we get to wave to lots of other Morgan owners, particularly since we live within 15 miles of the factory and there are loads of people who are still foolish enough to get their car serviced there.  Nobody it going to want to try and beat us off the lights - we couldn't give a F**k.

Anyone else have experience with "sporty" cars that arent your fords, renaults, VWs and other "hot hatch" types? Probably exclude BMW M series too given they have an equal reputation. Incidents are much rarer if your not in a hot hatch and of those that do still happen 90% of the time the other driver is in a hot hatch.

Whilst I dont go as far as debadging (insurers hate it for some reason) I would prefer a car with performance without the looks than no performance but the looks. Unfortunately even with debadging GTIs etc tend to have body kits that make them fairly recognisable. The ones I never understood were the people that bought the "special edition" which 9 times out of 10 was the basic car but with the GTI body kit. My second car was a Saxo 1.1 L and at the same time a friend got the 106 1.1 but with the GTI bodykit... always annoyed him that my little saxo was quicker off the line (obv driver skill ;) )

I’ve never driven a Morgan but many many moons ago a colleague gave me lift from Liverpool to my home in Cheshire one balmy summer evening. If I remember correctly the phrase he used was ...“I’ll show you what it can do!”

...as good as his word he showed me exactly what his Morgan could do!

I’d never experienced open top motoring and it seemed awfully fast at the time;...not sure how it would stand up against modern sporty cars though.  :)

I have a "performance" car which is a bit quick but not as fast as people think. I'm forever getting people in lower end German marques trying it on, the a1's, 118i's and a class's. Possibly cos mine is a low end marque, but I still show them up cos I'm a confirmed child.
