If you've owned a sporty car

Options
Something that is either known to be fast or looks like it'd be fast. You know the ones - the R's of the Golf world like the R now and the R32 before, STs & RS of the Ford scene, VXRs & GSIs etc etc.

Did you ever notice a difference in how other road users were with you? Especially those immediately behind you? Compared to say a 'regular' (poor term but best I can think of) car?

I have a ST right now but I wouldn't even say its fast as its really not. Not with being the diesel version, but I suppose it has the badge. I'm noticing a marked difference with how other road users are. Right up my back end trying to get me to go quicker. Itching for the overtake wanting me to bite. On you go son, I'm in no rush.

My personal favourite is being at the lights and you start to just creep forward every now and then like you're going to give it some. The guy next to you tyre screeches off as you just slowly pull away not giving a damn.

Didn't get this anywhere near as much in the last car. Barely ever.

So your purposely stopping short of the lights enough to allow you to creep forward several times to give the impression your going to speed off to the car next to you and then you wonder why cars are behaving differently around you  :D

I would say your driving style has probably changed as well if your doing things like that which has an effect on how other drivers around you behave if you give the impression your going to shoot off to get ahead of them when the lights change or if they think you have slowed down on purpose to annoy them.

I don't think it is so much that it is "sporty" as much as it is a hot hatch type thing.

A friend is a petrol head and has connections to the motor industry and has been kind enough to lend me certain vehicles over time. I've owned big engined cars but wouldn't class them as "sporty" even if their performance was equal to the cars you mention but I have had a Merc GT-S and a Golf R on loan from him before and you get a lot more silly behaviour from other driving in the Golf.

    I got caught once :(
Approaching a set of lights on the ringroad, left lane solid with vans, milkfloats, golf buggies horses & carts etc. Right lane empty except for one car right at the lights with tyres wider than my entire car, quad cam, bi-turbo, triple intercooled AWD everything.
So I pull up behind it.

When the lights change, it pulls way slower than if I'd been pushing it, and every single vehicle in the left lane including milkfloats, even the man pushing the roadsweeper cart pull away normally, and promptly switch to the right hand lane in front of it for the next set.

Now I double check that there is a faint plume of oily smoke coming out of any "sporty" looking car before I get stuck behind it ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • I had a 2019 Golf Gti Performance pack. Was forever getting Corsas etc revving up and trying to race me (just ignored them)

I have now changed to a 2020 Golf R estate which is much quicker than Golf Gti (and most other things on the road 0-60) but as it just looks like a plain white estate with a couple of tiny R badges I don't get any bother at all from boy race brigade … unless they know about Golf R and would need something a bit more than most of them have to even bother.

I used to own a heavily modified Impreza. -- think the same model used on Police Interceptors but tuned a lot more
Always got the Corsa brigade trying to race off the lights and such
High end cars such as Porches were just as bad
As for the rest - didn't really notice any difference unless I was coming up behind them on the motorway - most probably thought I was an Interceptor and moved right out the way
  • That's the thing, I've had the odd one or two Corsa rally boys doing it. I just let them by as I'd rather they were a pest up the road than immediately behind me being annoying.

But I've actually had more 40+ year olds doing it than anything. Suit wearer in a Peugeot 308 estate last night. I wasn't even driving slow. I was doing about 45 in a 40. I know I know, the perfect brigade will be out to crucify me for it but unlike them on here I don't pretend I don't break the speed limit.

If you want to make it sound like I stop a whole cars length from the line and that every time I move its at least a full rotation of the wheel then fine, go ahead. I can't be bothered to tell you otherwise as you've clearly decided how you want to interpret it.

Thanks for the insight into the mindset of other BMW drivers. It's nice to know that that they can be considerate to those they feel are their peers.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Have you retrofitted an indicator stalk?

    Sorry, had to :)
