E.On is rubbish. I am about to leave them. [You don't have to apologise on here for 'arguing'. As Robin9 has said some suppliers know when a reading is wrong and can correct it immediately.]

The fact of the matter is that E.On is a rubbish company. They've ignored all my messages to them and initially charged me far too little and now are trying to charge me far too much for my energy. Their statements are only updated every quarter which is really inconvenient. Today my online E.On account tells me that they will be collecting £130 in November yet my account is in credit.  I'll be long gone before November arrives but please be assured that it isn't you, it's them.

I'm currently preparing my complaint letter for the Ombudsman. You might like to do the same. In fact, please do. The more of us who complain, the more likely it is that something will be done.

certainly would agree. I left Eon and went to Avro. The regulator needs take a share of the blame though. They need to ensure that all providers meet minimum standards, such as flagging anomalies in usage, readings, etc. it's not difficult technology to implement. Smart meter adoption should also prevent issues like this one. See my post about Avro and smart meters though

To sum up. The closing reading from OVO was 2454. The latest correct reading in cubic metres is 3645. That means 1191 cubic metres consumed. This will be converted to kWh and the answer is about 13340. OP should explain this to E.On who should recalculate all the bills accordingly. If I had used that amount of gas, my supplier would have charged me about £320.

But a classic tale of woe that's only made possible by the energy industry's incompetence in adding multiple readouts to the smart meter.  Anything other than m3 should be restricted to the IHD only, where hopefully the user interface can be better.  It's so blindingly stupid but sadly not at all surprising.

I wonder if the useless industry body for screwing up meter readings has a "this reading is about 11 times the one we were expecting" algorithm to compensate?

At present it seems to offer the worst of both worlds.  If they don't like your closing reading they can dream up a random figure and you can't challenge it even with photographic evidence unless it's above a certain threshold.  Yet they haven't been involved in spotting such a large error if a user of a dumb smart meter gives the kWh reading instead of the volume; this must be an increasingly common mistake especially as it's one that's so easy to make.
I note that Neon Reef seem to use this procedure for every bill, not just the closing one, even though it's harder to misread an electricity meter.  It would be far better if all meter readings were subject to some sort of sanity check, but one that triggered a 'This Doesn't Seem Quite Right - Are You Sure?' response rather than the existing one of 'We Know Better And You Can't Challenge Us'.

    + standing charge?
Wonder where Ovo got the 2454 reading from, the previous tenant, a meter reader visit or an estimate? Not that it really matters, and as long as that's what Eon are using for their opening read to bill luker1980. Although if they are, it does mean that Eon accepted the reading of 007375 three months later. Though how luker1980 managed to give them a 6-digit reading, who knows?!

They will simply disregard the 2 leading zeros and bill on 7375.
