Huge Eon bill

Hi,

I’m new to the forum. Back in November we switched gas and electricity from OVO to Eon. We’ve been having all kinds of issues since. Long story short they say we have a debt of 2.5k. This seems to be due to gas usage between feb to May of 83045 KWH. the usage before and after seems normal. Does anyone know what this spike might have occurred? He did have a boiler service during this period and the gas engineer seems to spend quite some time messing with the metre.

Any advice would be appreciated as Eon have been useless and basically told us it must be correct because the meter says so.

Thank you in advance.

Type 'Rogue Meters' into the search engine on this page - Is your meter one of those mentioned ?

Very, very unusual for a Boiler Service plumber to even glance at the meter, unless that is he suspects a Gas leak

Give us a photo of your meter please - and the meter readings for the year inc the letters A, E and C

Do you provide the readings ?
    ?
Is you meter one of those with a small keypad ? If so which button do you press
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • We need your opening reads, reads today and a photo of the meter. It’s either wrong COS reads or the meter has been read incorrectly

    Hi,

so when we left OVO they had the last meter reading as 2454 on the final statement.
On 8th November we took - reading of 026610 attached below

The problem was then first drawn to our attention in Feb when we had our first bill from Eon and provided a meter reading which was 007375. I’ve attached a photo of this reading.

Since then the readings have been:
    03/03/20 - 007777
    10/03/20 - 008247
    03/05/20 - 010454
    17/03/20 - 011270
    20/07/20 - 011754
    10/10/20 - 013159

It looks like a problem occurred between the 2 readings I’ve given photos for but no idea why or how. Eon have been awful. During covid lockdown they basically said they weren’t dealing with these types of enquires. We hadn’t had a bill since Feb, and only press end them for one recently because they emailed saying out deal was going to end in Nov.

We’ve tried calling with no luck, live chatting, emailing etc etc. But no one seems to be able to understand what the issue is, and you have to start the whole conversation again every time you raise it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're reading the wrong register.  Gas readings have to be in m3 (or ft3 on old meters). A stupid design flaw of gas smart meters.

Hi, sorry I’m not sure what you mean. Is it something we’re doing wrong then?

Yes, you've not given the correct values - the display shows kWh, it should say m3. I believe you have to press button 9, it then says "Volume" and gives the reading (i got that from Googling your meter).

    You are reading in kWh

Usually button 9 to get meter volume in M3?

For a smart gas meter, do the following:

    1. Press 9 on the keypad.
    2. The word “VOLUME” will show on the screen.
    3. Your gas reading, in cubic metres (m3) will appear.
    4. Take the first five digits as your reading.

I’m not sure that helps though. The 2 photos are both shown in kWh, so the unit used doesn’t really change the jump in usage.
