  • If Maggie gives a rating I'll take it down - I'm still optimistic though. Awesome director. Awesome stars. And I've heard from some friends in the states that its the funniest film in ages, even if it has a flimsy concept
    Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense

Just back from my freebie in Edinburgh, its absolutely DIRE!! While I appreciate a couple of freebies, I can honestly say its the worse film I've seen in a long time. Jack Black is the only godsend, Mia Farrow looks like a deranged pensioner (no change there then)the other characters are totally unbelievable and the storyline is just terrible, just sentimental American drivel. Interesting to see what others think. Be Kind, Don't recommend it.

I can't make my manchester screening tomorrow night, I was thinking I would be missing a good film, maybe not now!

If anyone is interested in my tickets feel free to pm me (dont think I will be inundated with requests!) after the dire review.
  • After There Will Be Blood last night, was looking forward to this film. For me it was about half an hour too long. Think it will appeal to the folks who appreciate videos on You Tube. Some laughs, but lot of them in the preview clips. Not a film I would recommend. So give it 5 out of 10.

  • I thought Be Kind Rewind was pretty ok really. Its a very different film with a nice storyline about the community pulling together (for a change). Jack Black was good as ever. I would give it a 7/10. The Bucket List last week was great - Jack Nicholson was fantastic 9/10. A very good film.
PS Please could I join the 104 free previews in 2008???

I enjoyed 'The Bank Job' too. Made more enjoyable by the cinema being 3/4 full - and a good crowd too - no noisy munchers or natterers!

I'd give the film 8.5 out of 10.
  • My girlfriend and I saw The Bank Job last night and we agreed it's quite possibly one of the most enjoyable films either of us have seen at the cinema in years!

Perhaps this is due to our relatively low expectations - Jason Statham, as likeable as he is, doesn't often star in particularly great movies - it could be because we hadn't been exposed to excessive, relentless marketing and therefore knew nothing about the film prior to seeing it (other than "based on true events" and its intriguing tag line "A story in which the thieves were the most innocent people involved")... but I think, for the most part, it's because it's just a very entertaining, very satisfying, well acted, well scripted, and superbly directed action thriller.

A previous reviewer likened it to a low budget "Ocean's Eleven". I disagree. It's dark, gritty, and anchored in reality. It doesn't have a handsome, all-star, perfectly preened, wisecracking cast and an implausible robbery plan. It has all the dirt, sweat, adrenaline and paranoia you'd expect from a crime of this nature. And the "bank job" itself is just the beginning...

We both agreed that we probably wouldn't have ever seen this if it wasn't for the fact it was free. It would've been our loss. Absolutely brilliant and rarely have I seen such a satisfied audience leave a theatre (nor have I ever felt compelled to write a review for one of the free movies I've seen). There will be a lot of word-of-mouth recommendations surrounding this film and I'll be adding my contribution.
