Does getting car service done means it will pass M.O.T guarantee ?

  • My car was serviced but would have failed the MOT if I hadn’t sorted the issue myself first, because my dog had eaten one of the rear seatbelts. Seatbelt replacement not generally being part of the service.
  • Download a copy of form VT29 or a copy of the MOT Inspection Manual from the Gov.uk website. Retrieve your car's service schedule book from the glovebox. Place them side by side and compare what each one does and doesnt check. I'm fairly sure there is very little overlap.
Some places will do a 'free health check' which will include brakes and tyres, and they will likely try to convince you they need replacing well before they would trouble an MOT examiner!!!!!

My car went in for a service and MOT this morning. It passed it's MOT so I can only conclude that, yes, a service will sort everything possible with your car so it will sail through the MOT......or maybe it was because it was only 3 years old, had been well maintained and looked after all of it's short life.

    Who knows.....?

To be an MOT tester you have to
Have years of experience as a mechanic.
    Have passed exams.
    Have no criminal record.
    Take a training course.
Have an assessment to show you can do the job.
Have continuing training and annual tests.
If you aren't up to the job you will be prevented from working as an MOT tester.
To SERVICE a car. No experience, training or exams needed. You can be a clown in the circus one day. Servicing cars at a main dealers the next. Trading Standards surveys reveal that dangerous defects are often missed during car servicing.
During an MOT the tester works methodically through every task. During a service the mechanic does whichever tasks he feels like doing.
Conclusion MOT testing actually quite good. Car servicing is a joke.

Does a service involve checking all the lights are working?
Does a service involve checking all the dash warning lights are working?
Does a service involve checking to see if there is any bodywork rust?
Does a service involve checking that suspension is not leaking/broken springs?
Does a service involve checking all the brakes are up to the MOT efficiency test?
Could go on, but what is the point.,
Far better to say when taking it in for a service, can they do a pre MOT check. Will cost, but at least gives you a bit of peace of mind.

Basically no as a service and an MOT are not the same thing and the person servicing the car will not be doing the same things as an MOT tester. Some things may be the same but they won't be going through the entire MOT checklist because that's not what a service is. A service looks after particular mechanical aspects while an MOT also looks at safety aspects such as seat belts, whether your horn works, tyre tread depth etc.

Say I got it serviced in the morning, done all the fault it brought up, drove it across the road to a different garage for a Mot?
    Will it pass for sure?
    If not, why not?
What isn't being done in the service that could potentially fail M.O.T?
Your average garage who are not an MOT station will not have headlamp beam testers or brake rollers  nor emission testing equipment .
They will also not have any access to the DVSA special notices that add to the MOT manual

First pass the MOT, then do the service.
