Is it worth paying a CCJ so it shows as `satisfied' even though it still gives a bad credit history?

Dear All, Despite a very good income, secure job and savings, I have a very poor credit score due to a CCJ from a parking ticket 3 years ago. Is it worth me paying it anyway so it shows as `satisfied' even though it will be there on my report another 3 years? I am supposed to be relocating for a much better job from my housing association flat to private rented near my new job, but right now I don't see a private landlord accepting me which is pretty scary as i have already left my old job and thought it was just a matter of finding the right place to privately rent and move to. Thanks in advance for your advice :)

You realise that they can chase you indefintely for this. One day you'll be sat at home and the bailiffs are towing your car...

And interest is charged at 8% over RPI, so your savings are literally losing you money?

I'm sure the creditor will think it was worth your while.

If you want a better view from others of your credit rating pay if off TODAY.  If you don't mind people assuming you don't pay your debts then don't pay it off: Your choice!

You'd be able to present evidence you'd paid it, obvs...

Even with the original fine + court costs so far, how much can it be? £1000?

As soon as the creditor instructs bailiffs to actually try to collect on the debt, your costs go up quickly.. any work to attach earnings, visit your property, remove goods etc will add £000s to the debt. And that can happen anytime, even after you've spent years suffering as a result from reduced choice in getting credit, rentals, etc.

You owe a debt - you can afford to pay it. For no other reason than morally you should, just pay it and be done with it.

This has to be a wind up surely?
edit: OP says here it is £197 but does not know what for.
And says here she had an unpaid Virgin fee that was registered as a default.
I'm guessing most landlords would be pleased to know in advance that this prospective tenant is a risk.....

so who is the ticket for ?  If it’s a council debt it needs paying,  anything else will affect your for 3 years whether you pay it or not

Did you receive any letter from court? If you have an acceptable reason, you can apply set aside.

If you know you are going to have a bad record, but you still refuse to pay, that’s a different story and I can’t comment any further.

Well assuming it's for parking as the OP stated, get over to the Parking board and see if a set-aside of the CCJ is possible. That would be a far better result!
  • I have watched that 'Can't pay we'll take it away' on TV and wonder how some of them get into such a mess - the sorts who can obviously pay their debts but stick their heads on the sand and then get all bolshy/confused/aggressive when bailiffs turn up and try to claim they know nothing about it!
I know some parking co's are worse than bank robbers but if you get a CCJ just pay up although you shouldn't have let it get that far in the first place.
