Look around at what's available on other networks:

For example, with Three you can have 12GB for £8, also likely to be sufficient if you're not streaming movies etc while on the train.
But don't sign up for what you choose before calling EE for your PAC to port your number; they will ask what you intend switching to and (after checking that it's truly available) very likely offer you a similar deal by discounting a regular tariff.
Last time I did this a couple of years ago they gave me the £16.99 500MB plan that you are currently on for £4/mth.

OP I have ny phone connected to data all the time and brouse for about 2 hors a day monday to friday. I am on a 4Gb sim only contract and use about 2Gb per month. To save data on sat nav you can download maps of the areas you need on wifi and save them as offline maps.

I've never found using satnav data has used very much. Agree with others that for data on all the time, some browsing, emailing etc 4gb is more than enough and will avoid any anxiety about going over. If you tether or download hd films then the data disappears quickly!0

My data is on 24/7 and I donot exceed my current 1GB of data. Even when on holiday using the phone GPS/Navigation.
Using lots of data your either gaming, downloading or streaming media. Not everyone needs a ton of data, lots of
contracts seem to be pushing huge amounts of data though.

For general info I can report that on a site called SIMSherpa you can find various SIM-only deals that aren't available on the main companies' websites. I'm on a Vodafone "basic" contract with 8gb of data and unlimited calls and texts for £8 per month which I found via that site. If you go to the Vodafone site direct you'll never find prices like that and I suspect it might work for other networks too.0

SIMsherpa is simply another price comparison website, and nothing special about it. And contrary to it's claims about 'hidden' deals, my Virgin deal is nowhere to be seen, and at the time it was openly available on it's own website!!!

EE can give you 10gb data and unlimited calls and texts for £10pm inc vat. my data is always on and used for sat nav, social media when out, general surfing and emails and i use around 3gb a month. my wifes phone is on my account. she gets 1gb for under £5pm AND i can 'gift' her data from my allowance every month for free.0
