Thanks Davesnave, might be the inconspicuous part that is the problem. I am blind in one eye and have depth perception problems with the other. Next year I will take photos at various stages as I can see better what is happening at magnification. Might try propagation by layering if any branches are close enough to the ground. I would be happy to buy but do not know the exact variant. Some are dwarf and I want taller. Lights are lovely, not going to ask how you got them up an 18' tree!
Perhaps check out air layering on You Tube?
I have never done it but it looks an easy option, and from some I've looked at no need for special binding tape, some say PTFE that plumbers use is fine, or even insulating tape. Only needs to stop dehydration & be a bit stretchy to allow expansion
I did see one where they had used a split plastic bottle, and another using a Kinder egg filled with compost, but any sterile rooting medium would do I guess
I was toying with air layering an apple and looking on YT was as far as I got

Today was a good hard frost, which is probably the end of my nasturtiums, I can now add clearing them up to the list

And don't you protect the plants from frost so that they come to life again in the spring? I dig up lily and hyacinth bulbs every year in the fall. I don't like to rely on a mild winter and think that everything will be ok. There have already been situations when more than half of the bulbs died during the winter.

No, I live in Southern England and all my bulbs, including lilies & dahlias survive just fine outside
Where about are you to get such cold weather, guessing North America / Canada with the "fall" reference

  • Same here F - cold day today which might kill off any bugs that are still hanging about. Just fed the birds then back in for a coffee and home made scones 😊
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈

Another frosty morning but ventured out, mainly for fresh veg but checked the volunteer borders while out and pruned some of the roses there, they are very straggly TBH
I think this was caused by a weeping cherry being planted [not by me] smack in the centre of their bed & shading them all summer
The cherry has now gone, replaced by an oriental poppy [again not by me] but at least the roses should get decent daylight next year

The frost made some nice photos, at least in my head they did, the camera had other ideas
However here's some frosted rosa rugosa hips from this morning

Yesterday was half-decent after a rainy start, and today it's damp again with no frost to contend with. :)
I managed more surreptitious pole-sawing on the slightly contentious boundary yesterday, removing one large oak branch and lots of holly to let more light in. Standing in the stream meant use of a battery weapon only and I continue to be amazed at how well the £50 Lidl saw performs. <3
Sheep were enjoying the haylage and being silly when I saw them on my late afternoon rounds:

A very frosty start here this morning, forecast is Dave's "damp" arriving later
I forgot my tuberous begonias are still outside, now black & limp [ooer missus :D ]
I may just nip out quickly and get the tubers inside and check over for vine weevils, not worried about the dahlias, they survive and in any case only from seed so easily replaceable

Did the sheep get help from the other sheeple getting back out?
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈
  • How'd you go with the begonias F?

Rain just arrived here but been a dry day.  I think warmer weather is on its way for now 🤞

Well, it sort of landed half on them when I decided to lift it out before darkness fell, but once it panicked they all did!
Warmer wet weather chased me back from the coast where I decided I'd shop today, but I won! B)

  • At least it was a soft landing D lol 😊

Milder night here, plan to sort out some house plants today -  mainly a spider plant looking like it needs a haircut.  Don't have much luck with house plants here 😔
