Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Very odd garden in that house IMO - big greenhouse and polytunnel, and bins that could be for compost, but hardly any plants and acres of boring lawn... Maybe it's been pimped for the photos by CGI, to encourage enquiries from people who don't like gardening, removing the large veg plot that surely belongs in there4

DD2 had her 'legal' wedding there. We left here exactly 2 hours before it was scheduled and, luckily, the M5 cooperated. The couple made it on time, but I was going bananas, trying to park! Only missed a few minutes, but it took years off my life!
-taff said:Dusty, good to see you're still smiling and influencing people cattle [to part ways and let you through] I do find it quite hilarious to keep seeing your walking companion from the rear.Yes, that's a problem I've not resolved. I've ruled out blurring her face, and some pictures seem to need a human or animal for context/focus. I'm always lagging behind as well, 'cos she's way fitter than I am!Any ideas?

Paddington Bear = Hard stare....omg ybe, that is a house and a half, I would fight someone for it...Imagine what you could do with the garden, you can experiment till the cows come home, a bit of formal knot stuff, some gravel garden, an allotment at home, so many sitooteries, and such quiet neighbours! And a lovely bit of original feauturing...it's gorgeous. As Dusty says, shame about the neighbours...but then, maybe he'll move on quick smart...Dusty, it was by a library is all I know, I don't know Bristol that well at all.Wort, I don't miss nights at all, they really sod up your body...fingers crossed for a Rottery win..Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi4

I don't think I'll be dropping in for a quick Chateauneuf du Pape until that Rottery win comes up.Agree with the sentiments re night shifts. Did the 3 shift system for 6 months when I was young, and it messed-up my body clock. Memories of that period are very hazy.I can tell how much younger than me you are, by your great response to Bluey's property post!Just say, "No!"5

Overnight rain here, lots of it, hoo blooming ray! Watering can back in it's parking bay for a day or two. The sun has come out now to dry incey wincey spider out.YoungBlueEyes said:Farway I'm pinching your Mary Poppins joke, it's a good groaner is that
Did you get more pears rescued/stewed? Pears + cheese is a fab combo, beaten only by apples + cheese imo. Yummy yum yum
Hopefully the Beurre Alexandre will be a good replacement for your hard red jobbers. Your neighbour being eaten out of house and home by puppies, I shouldn't laugh but
Please god my neighbour hasn't mixed doubles....
Anyway, next question. When you're pre-emptively looking at gardens that come with a house, how much garden is too much garden? Cos I've found a house but I think I understand now why people say "no that's too much, I'd never be able to maintain it"...
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/163936076#/?channel=RES_BUYWhat a pity the neighbour turned out like that, looks like you can sometimes tell a book by the coverThat house, what a cracker for the price when I compare with around hereThose out houses & glass houses etc, makes me wonder what previous owner had, some sort of business, storage, keen glass house exhibits? And I note what looks like blocks of flats next door, with "handy" potential football pitches in front. I'd suggest looking at weekends as well as weekdays. As Dusty & Taff say, lots of potential with the garden, it's not larger than one I had, but I had mine as mostly grass for the childrenI think all those walls cry out for trained fruit, more work, though. You could rent out the outhouses, the way things are going our Ange will be along for them anywayReading the tales of neighbours makes me thankful for mine.
My neighbour mentioned this yesterday, lots of acorns, berries, sycamore seeds, apples, pears etc. Folklore dictates this means harsh winter on the way, nature providing plenty of fattening bird food.Dustyevsky said:Another sign indicating the end of summer, is the sudden reduction in the number of House Martins and Swallows. Last week, I could see 30 or 40 on the wires in the morning. Now, the majority seem to have gone. That's early! Do they know something?Stewed a load of my apples first thing, not being keepers I have to freeze themPears, I'll sample one lunchtime and stew if ripeAnd, finally, I have a pepper ripening, I only grew them for looks, not taste, but the way my indoor toms turned out I may grow more peppers next yearNumerus non sum6 -
Yep it is a shame about Illustrated Man Dusty, but we talked last night and we're for getting the house done up - all those little bits we didn't get round to yet - and get on the market in the Springtime. It shouldn't be like this, people like him should be the ones to accommodate the decent sorts, not the decent sorts being the ones put out
I gave The Oracle wosname's number but I can't see what good it'll do. Illustrated Man + 4 needs to go and a nice one moved in. But what are the odds of that. Anyone out there with decent neighbours, treasure them. Bake them wee buns and have them round for some dinner and cut their grass and fetch their bins in, cos they are wealth beyond measure. I'm sorry you're going through it too Dusty, it's not right is it. Will yous maybe move nearer DD2 or are there too many kids about too much community?
I would miss The Oracle and my garden wort, you're right... Ahh the sound of rain clattering on a roof makes my heart smile. Did you stand a minute and just enjoy it?
Rain 2p!! Woooooo hoo! Not be long 'til your garden recovers now, and there's more rain to come today too :clapping: Hopefully it was buffet party day at table tennis, seems good timing to have a party to celebrate the rains
It is a queer garden innit Less, there's not enough gardening to do to warrant all the garden doings... unless the greenhouses etc are being informally rented to a neighbour or summat... dunno.
Paddington Bear = Hard Stare! Seems a bit obvious now you've said it taff
I told BBM your Mary Poppins joke Farway and he loved itSpeaking of jokes that you have to be careful of the ending, here's one - (any sensitives or little ears listening, turn away now!) -
What's the difference between a circus and a !!!!!! house? Well one's a cunning array of stunts...Ahem.
Yep I agree about caution re some of the neighbours to that house, screams Right To Buy brigade lots of feral chillun possibly a bit noisy to meAnyway lookit yer peppers
Don't get used to growing them cos we're all for having a belter of a year next year with toms. You start thinking of growing lots of peppers and that'll ensure it ha haa! Lots of berries round here too so maybe a proper Winter is on the way... I'll ask Cissie on Sunday.
OT it's dried up a bit out there, it was dreary and dark and damp and cool when I got up this morning. Felt Like 10'c13' currently and a high of 20' to come. They say. Doubt it meself, the rain's due mid aft again and that's wind's for picking up. Possibly. DomNon this morning and food shopping, then out to himself's neice's new house for a Coo Over My Baby party. I can't remember if I've mentioned her now or not but they she has a boy+girl name amalgamated so they she can decide what they she wants to be when they she grows up  Apparently the neighbours think it's a wunnnderfull idea. If Our Ange has pots to fill she wants to be putting a tax on that nonsense!

A quiet, autumn-feeling morning today, but wind is due to get up, and there's rain on the way, allegedly, with the prospect of it clearing by late afternoon. A polytunnel and indoor administrative nonsense day, then.
Not that there's any administration going on elsewhere, it seems. Emails to log supplier, plumber, and digger man have elicited nil responses.
Digger guy eventually replied to a text, saying he 'hopes' to be here next week. I 'hope' we get that lottery win too!
My walking pal and I decided not to risk anything with all the showers around yesterday, so reminisced about the good old days and did a quick tour of her garden. She's planning changes and talking of moving plants and dividing them too, so there's been an advancement in her confidence. At one time, even getting her to cut plants back was difficult. Understandably, she isn't keen go public on MSE, taff, so it's rear views or nothing, I'm afraid! It didn't rain yesterday afternoon where we were, despite all the blobs on the rainfall map and some threatening-looking skies. Apparently, the worst Thursday night/Friday morning rain was in Devon's southern areas, where there was some flash flooding. Here, despite sounding quite intense, the stream didn't flow, nor was there a perceptible change in extremely low river level. Here's a quick snap I took of the border as the weather broke:
As you can observe, the show of flowers is muted now. In fact, without the annual rudbeckias, it would be pretty drab! The large plant in the centre being tossed-about by the wind is Lythrum 'Rosy Gem.' Totally bomb-proof.Speaking of bombs, I see Ana's still prepping like crazy over on the Toob, so I hope all the MSE grannies (and grandads) who follow her are building their bunkers.
I built mine in the summer of 1958, and I was extremely proud of it, until about October, when it filled with water!
And speaking of the Toob, there's an interesting Talk Radio programme with Julia Hartley Brewer. She and a contributor question the inebriates' data, some of which is supposed to have been gathered from weather stations closed for many years! I'm not linking, as questioning this narrative, like a previous hot topic, seems to get one into trouble. And finally, a sign on a Methodist Church: "Adultery is a sin. You can't have your Kate and Edith!"Just say, "No!"6 -
Bright start this morning, but rain, ex Dusty, is due this afternoon.Had loads yesterday, including funder, bird bath is topped up at last, so the birdies can now rinse my apples' flesh off their beaks.Glad BBM enjoyed the Mary P Joke Bluey, you'll get your well deserved pay rise yet.Dustyevsky said:Speaking of bombs, I see Ana's still prepping like crazy over on the Toob, so I hope all the MSE grannies (and grandads

I may delve deeper later.I'll pick the ripening toms later, before rain arrives and the slugs get a taste for themMy red pears, one manky one overnight again, but I did have one with cheese yesterday, OK but nothing to rave over, the tipping point between raw/ ripe / manky must be sometime during the night.I've put the French hard green buttery ones in the fridge, to try & delay ripening until I'm ready. That's what the books say to do.Only other gardening is putting the stewed apples in the freezer, and maybe catch GWNumerus non sum7 -
That's very green Dusty. And flowers!
We've had rain today. Just light but a few hours so about another inch. Haven't investigated how deep it's gone as leg bad and visitor.
Temperature about 13c which is a bit of a shock as I've adjusted to high 20s.
So no gardening news but another couple of TV suggestions..... Wild Isles, Back from the Brink a positive natural history prog.
I enjoy the short progs Our Lives about ordinary people who do interesting things. The Mermaid from Merthyr was an odd one that I loved. What a woman!
These all seem to be regional progs that we don't get.
Not sure what tomorrow holds. More rain hopefully . I won't be saying that too often 😉I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on

You might think your boarder is a bit drab Dusty but it's better looking than mine. Rosy Gem is a lovely purpley/pink colour
Good to hear Walking Friend has more confidence in her garden, they can be such a tonic
Lucky you've got loads of garden to be doing while you wait for replies to emails... or will they just turn up one day and you're not ready?
I'm pinching your "adultery is a sin" joke too <giggle>
Good news that your red pears are nowt to write home about Farway, think how upset you'd be if they were mouth-wateringly delicious and you never caught them in the 20 minutes overnight when they were just right
If the weatherpersons are to be believed there'll be rain aplenty for everyone this Autumn 2p, hopefully not to flash floods level thoughI've put your prog suggestions on my list
Baby Cooing party was good fun, I even managed to keep my mouth shut when the proud parents asked us which one of them we thought she most looked like (the correct answer was Clare Balding, same hair and everything!) They and their London Money bought a gorgeous house in Harrogate, lovely big old Georgian thing, but the garden was a courtyardIt did have a grape vine though, with lots of ripe grapes on it, that were very yummy
I might re-d/l the drunkards app again, because FOMO. The sobers and Tusky aren't getting it right either - not even with hindsight - so why punish the sots for being wrong *shrug* We watched a thing on Ch5 last night "The Drought of '75" or summat. Same old same old, until the voice-over said "and there was snow in June!" Was there? Was there really? Wasn't worth the watch. Nor was BG, I did watch it but on mute with the subtitles on, until Irene Berry and her Japanese garden came on talking about acers. That was good
OT sunny and breezy and humid and cool. 14'c currently and a high of 21 to come. Won't feel it with that breeze mind.
Oh and anyone confused by my joke - the word the mods put lots of !!!!! over sounds like hoar :rolleyes:Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.5
