Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Hope you manage to have a decent day at work wort. Have the temps dropped a bit over that side? I agree about pears - they should be quite soft and juicy, not 'jeez this is gonna cost me me front teef!'
I bet it was bladdy hot at the Armed Forces Day do yesterday. I don't like to miss it but I wasn't for going out in that heat, no way Pedro! Did you get any pics Farway? Ooh that's a good crop of cherries? Have you tried them yet? Are they good eatin'? Love your nasturtiums, aren't they jolly
Good to hear karma's struck those it needed to DustyThat US study saying we should leave it to the 'experts' and just sit inside all day doom-scrolling can shurrup. I'm having a bad year this year I think, but I'm not for stopping. It's good fun learning things and trying things and enjoying the fruits of my labour. Not literal fruits mind, I've no toms nor pears nor plums nor cherries nor nowt. Well I have all them rasps but they were here when we moved in so I can't claim credit for them. You just crack on eh, what's coming for ye will no pass by ye and all that. I wouldn't mind being a few shillings behind those sisters, but I've a bit less all in my wherewith than they have. Same mindset though, on some things. Not that that served me well the other day, driving about in all that heat fgs! Speaking of driving, what news on the van..?
That's a cracking little sitooterie 2p and your garden looks well. Sitting and reading with the fragrance of lavander, heavenMy neighbour (singular) was out so that's why I cracked on with DomNon, I wouldn't have done it if he was in. Not that he affords us the same courtesy, the ersehole. I do open the back windows a wee bit for the draught
It's easy in LiaM cos all the windows are electric - oooOOOooo!
What's the setup of the area around your weedy gravel pp? Is it the parking bit out the front that just runs down to the street? Or is it edged by pretty borders/the rest of your garden..? If not - I'd be out there with salty water or a boiling kettle. That'd learn 'em. I always blow on the weeds first to get rid of the wee bugs, or if it's a big one I'll tap it a bit to get them to clear out. Did a little blue sweety straighten out your pineapple?
Did you and Anonymous Dog see many folks out at that time gb? Ime proper people get the dogs out in the cool, it makes me angry to see people walking great big dogs in the midday heat, and then sit on a bench in the sun with the poor dog gasping it's heart outIf I ever disappear from here it'll be because I've intervened with the wrong person and I''m dead in a gutter somewhere.
A multicurrant bush Less, how pleasing is that! That rose is an absolute belter, do you clip it into that arch shape? Your foxglove looks like it's in a beautiful meadow
Welcome @HighlanddreamI quite fancy a polytunnel but not in this heat I don't ha haa! Have you lots of tom plants?
OT its 20'c out there at the minute. The quaffers were a bit right yesterday. We did got 2 rain showers, whole consecutive minutes worthNo thunder or lightning or good stuff but. Dry today, possibly, and cooler than these last couple of days. Top temp might be 25' and breezy with it.

YBE - I'm meeting a few people out early, but lots of people still seem to be walking at normal times (and some not walking at all), just slower. Stinky's actually spending a lot of time on the kitchen floor, which is cool - but still asks to go and chase his ball in the middle of the day. He has access to lots of water (including his paddling pool) so there is always something to drink. Mind you, he's off for the snip tomorrow, so he'll be having a quiet couple of weeks!8

Aww bless him! Well at least he won't have the heat to contend with, on top of his ..removal. A woman I work with has 2 paddling pools for her 2 dogs. They need different sizes and depths cos one's a yappy little might-as-well-be-a-cat sort of dog and the other's a collie ha haa!I oppose genocide. I support freedom of speech. Gorgeous rose Less 🙂
Love your pineapple Poppy. What next? I had a mahoosive banana plant that started off as a baby.
Envious of the beautiful nasturtiums, I still have the seeds but they're still in the packet 😞
Aww poor little dog Wort. Good thing he's got a paddling pool to soak his sore bits. I can still remember when I took mine. Huge guilt on my part so he got the very best walk beforehand 🥴
Day of to a carp start. Just got up and saw female blackbird sitting on the fleece looking excited and ignoring my window knocking.
By the time I got out there she'd got under the fleece but got such a fright as I ran out won't be back for a while.
Looked under the fleece and she's had all my ripe cherries since yesterday.
As I only had a dozen I've wound the fleece round tight and hope.
Less says they ripen indoors but I read they don't??????
So I decided watch Beechgrove over breakfast. The TV decided there was no signal so half an hour sorting that out.
Guess today is netting the raspberries and more deadheading, and sweep that sittorie after looking at the photo 😲
it's come over gloomy (like me lol) and cold after a hot start.
Who knows what comes next?
Hope you're all having a more relaxing Sunday ☺️I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Less, that musk rose makes the one I posted from last Monday's visit, pale into insignificance!
I like your light pink foxglove too. We get a few of them, but not enough.
wort said:We didn’t get the storms or rain, though it was slightly cooler , but not in the bars nowhere to sit outside and sweat boxes inside.Wort!GB, at this point in the year, I'm always up at silly o'clock to ensure the hens rise at a sensible hour. If I don't let the daylight in, they'll carry on sleeping, maybe till 08.00, but then they won't want to roost at a convenient time. Can't win.Ladies never sweat, they 'glow!'
I hope you had a good night regardless, and not just because it didn't thunder.

Speaking of driving, what news on the van..?Sometimes Karma takes time. In that instance, it took about 4 years. Perhaps a lot of 'Karma' is simply down to normal pay-back for doing unkind deeds. In that case, though, had our friends not been treated shabbily, they'd still be here, and their large garden would remain a green & pleasant space. They sold to a developer ...say no more!As Farway said, I intended to flog the van prior to the next MoT. Now, I must help the young folk move at the end of the month, so I'm hoping it will last that long. Then, we'll see. It's old, but those things do 250k miles without serious issues, and it's not done 70k yet! As I found in a busy car park yesterday, it's not the best 'runabout!' It needs 2 parking spaces in tandem!
Nothing to report here. It was dull and I was sweaty glowing yesterday while I was shopping. We had occasional spits and spots of rain. Today feels fresher, and the cloud is welcome, as some plants in pots were being frazzled by continuous sunshine and strong winds.I don't think I've posted a picture of us building a new shed base. SiL made the framework, using the scaffold boards we were given recently, and I'm filling them to a given depth with concrete. So far, I've put one layer in and have the reinforcing rods prepped for the second pour, but it's been too hot for mixing concrete! The infill/sub base is comprised of stones we've dug out of the veg garden!

Warm and sunny again, my sleepless nights are catching up on me, I'm cream crackered this morningHowever, I did force myself to water some pots at the front, with more heat on the way and the pots are just starting to look as intendedEven the Regale lilies are just about to pop open, they are near the path, so should be knock out scent for passers-by.Oh dear 2P, cherries and birds, fatal attraction. It has taken me since 2009 to get my huge crop, normally I'm left with just a few pips. This year I used chicken mesh as a skeleton framework, then draped fleece over it, ensuring it hung well below the bottom branches, so no sneaking under.Pegged with clothes pegs to prevent blowing away or squirrels liftingtwopenny said:As I only had a dozen I've wound the fleece round tight and hope.
Less says they ripen indoors but I read they don't??????
Hope you're all having a more relaxing Sunday ☺️Just asked Chatgpt about this, and it saysThe difference in ripening behavior between cherries and apples comes down to whether the fruit is climacteric or non-climacteric."Climacteric fruits (like apples, bananas, tomatoes) can be picked unripe and still become sweet and soft.
Non-climacteric fruits (like cherries, strawberries, grapes, citrus) must ripen on the plant to reach full flavor and texture"
Let me know if you want a full list of climacteric vs. non-climacteric fruits! And now we all know, every day etc, linked with ethylene gas emissions from the fruit, the old put a ripe banana in a fruit bowl trickStill munching my cherries, I'll pick some more maybe later, assuming I'm not caught up in a nuclear blast of courseThat would be the final irony, waits years for cherries, then vaporized.
I like the idea of brandy soaked cherries, but with my medical avoidance of booze it's not to be, same goes with my red bullet pearsTalking of currants, my white ones are ripe, but sharp as a dragon's tooth, or is it sour as witches tongue? Anyway, not tasty eaten raw & CBA to add to pie etc.In the past, I've bunged them and assorted berries into Hedgerow Jam. If I had enough rhubarb, I could chuck them in a crumble of sorts.Today is a clematis, somewhere is a label. This clematis went on holiday to the fjords but has returned and is climbing into my plum tree, probably attracted by the whiff of doom.

Even my eyelids were ‘glowing’ yesterday, Dusty, it was that hot 🥵 thankfully a lot fresher today, thanks to the heavy rain we’ve got now… 🙄
Not gravel, YBE, these are proper sized stones. Impossible to dig (spade or fork - I’ve tried both, plus other tools), so as far as I know it’s either weed killer or incineration. The more I think about it the more I’m leaning towards a flamethrower/heat gun.
twopenny, the only birds that take any notice of my knocking on the window are the crows.
I wasn’t sure if Less was being a bit ‘oo’er missus’ with the body parts reference. Apologies if my mind went to the smutty side 😂 Lovely photos btw.
That’s a very nice clematis, Farway.
Hope work wasn’t too draining today, wort.
Problem area…

Your foxglove looks like it's in a beautiful meadowIf you like that, how about my blackberry and apple tree ...Was quite surpised when I spotted the actual fruit in the second shot, most of the rest of the tree is only just in flower...The rose is way too high and vigorous to consider clipping - it's a hack-back after flowering where it's trying to invade paths (and now apple trees)

Let me know if you want a full list of climacteric vs. non-climacteric fruits! Not sure if that last bit was you or ChatGPT Farway - certainly is quite chatty if the latter...I've been picking mine when they are at the just-turning red stage, and they're definitely turning redder indoors...though have to admit they are still quite sharp, but luckily I prefer my fruits not on the too sweet side... Mention of whitecurrants prompted me to look up those, and redcurrants, re. their climactericness, and apparently they are not - but I also pick these on the underipe side (for similar bird-predation-evasion reasons), and they also, IMO, continue to ripen (and sweeten) off the plant... (my whitecurrants at the moment still green bullets, and will be for a long time yet...)pink_poppy said:

Problem area…Re. problem area, I have many like this (my "meadow" kindly referred to by YBE will go that way too if left untended), and I am concluding, after fighting with invading grasses, particularly (in one area couch that hides under edging stones until back is turned) that the only way to go is to abandon the constant fight and plant stuff amongst them...Isn't that more-or-less what prairie-planting is anyhow? (I tell myself
)... Experiment sort-of in progress at the moment.
