Yes Abs, I used to have a huge orangy red one that grew up the wall and visible from my breakfast table. It was a joy to see in the late winter mornings.I now have a white one that is potted at the end of my dull alley and it blooms prolifically and cheerfully. Greatly underestimated.Today I found this. Couldn't believe the amount of blooms and colour. I was going to ask for ID but then remembered Google LensIt would need to go somewhere it could do it's thing because it's a bit of a mess in growth and would hog the ground, tough to get out.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

twopenny said:Dusty, mosses and lichens are so beautiful. I feel I should learn more about them but then it's the mystery of ancient organisms that enhances the beauty. You've had wind? Well you know what I meanA close relative has an interest and expertise in mapping mosses, liverworts, and lichens. He's about 9 years older than me (!) and still goes on field trips.
I'll settle for a fernery, with a few artistically placed stumps and some natural-looking perennials that don't mind shade.
Our overnight wind here was accompanied by a great deal of rain, judging by the ground and rivers. The weather had calmed down considerably by mid-morning, so we went out for the day, ending-up by the coast around mid afternoon. The sea was still pretty wild, even on a broad stretch of beach, with no rocks.Arriving home at dusk, we spotted the Air Ambulance circling, ready to make a landing in the valley. I ran (almost!) to the gap in the hedge, but just missed a photo of the descent as it went behind the pine trees. There's no update on their website yet on the mission's nature, but a landing there is most unusual.
EDIT: This morning, the helicopter website says they attended a 70+ year old man and treated him for a medical condition, but didn't take him to hospital. Perhaps the local critical care car was elsewhere. Its base is closer than the helicopter's.Any news from NI or Scotland?"Everything's just f.....ine!"8 -
Morning all
I've forgotten who said what now, but I'll carry on anyway.
Did all you westerners and proper norvveners come through it ok? Did the mossy roof get cleared...? It was brave and windy here (I also got a couple of washes out, I've got the softest towels and bedding in the village ha haa!) Beloved Cousin said it was the worst she'd seen in her lifetime - schools + supermarkets and all kinds of places shut and folk told to stay home. She had to work - she drives about a lot - and said it was almost nightmarish. Cissie said "well... it was a bit lively but sure it's only wind"
So are you back on an even keel now 2p? Hopefully they've fixed whichever errant part was misbehaving :fingerscrossed: Glad to see you back too pp, and that your real life happening is now done with
Welcome @the_lunatic_is_in_my_head. That's a beautiful sceneFunny how we all guessed our own area, I thought it looked very Antrim-ish. Looking forward to more of that
I like the mossy tyre, and the log pile. I do like moss in general, it's so quiet and unassuming. And varied. Fingers crossed your daffs are Jetfire Farway
Less I've still got bags of last years dross to use up, but if I see any well-it's-got-some-peat-in-it compost I'll lift that and mix my carp in with it.
Hopefully the air ambulance got to whoever it was in time Dusty, they must have been in bother to send out one of those
Nothing to report from Shawshank Patch. I still have a garden, and it's been windy, and a bit cold sometimes. Too cold to sit out for lunch so I've nothing to report there either. But it's the first day of Spring a week today (for some people) so just change sides and you'll be a month nearer it. I don't have any legal advice funny doings from work to report. I've got my word salad work performance appraisal review wosname on Tuesday morning, so we'll see what transpires from that. It's meant to be after your 3rd full month working there, but Office Manager woman just found out Big Boss Man has already given me a key so I expect that's what's brought it forward
OT bright and cold and a bit breezy today. With the calm weather all my wee birds are back to business as usualI removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.8 -
One of the GW had a couple in Scotland who were growing many varieties of moss. He was really passionate about it.
The winds died down here after teatime, we had no rain, hoping today is dry as it certainly looks good at the moment. Another wash load is imminent 😹
lots of bulbs poking up but only scillia actually with flowers on.Nice photo Dusty I could stand watching the sea for hours.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.8 -
Our power went off at 4pm yesterday and didn't come back on until about 7.40am this morning. No mobile signal either, so we were quite literally in the dark and didn't know how widespread the problem was. Last night we had the fire on and candles lit so were quite cosy (in one room anyway). DH put some music on his speaker and phone and we sat and drank red wine, so it was actually quite a nice evening. Grateful the power is back on now though.
The mossy 'ring' wasn't a tyre, Dusty. It was actually quite big, even though it doesn't look like it in the pic. I think it was a concrete bit or pipe or something. I don't know about the moss on the roof, but I'm just thankful the roof is still there tbhWe had a couple of really powerful gusts of wind last night and I honestly thought the window was going to come through - I saw the glass and frame moving - that was quite scary and pussycat wasn't very happy about it.
Good luck with the appraisal, YBE, I'm sure you'll sail through it
twopenny, lovely Iris. Hope you're feeling a bit brighter today.
Hailstones forecast for this morning and we still have a yellow warning for wind. Off to check on DD's pussycat'A watched potato will never chit'...8 -
Let's start on topic: we've had a light frost overnight, and it's a sunny day, which should persist if no planes are routed this way. Then, tomorrow, it's more wind and a belt of rain. I've no idea why the Exeter inebriates have a yellow warning for rain on Monday, but high winds are forecast, so they may have confused themselves.
Everything looks fairly normal thereafter for the end of January. Good, still loads to do!

I liked your idea of having a cat shelter in the garden, wort. Our moggies can come and go as they please, but we have a family member who visits with 2 dogs, so something similar for the wintertime would be good.I've been asked to chainsaw some fallen tree branches by a neighbour today, so I'll have to get a wiggle on. No actual gardening news, so here are another 2 rough weather at the seaside photos from yesterday."Everything's just f.....ine!"9 -
Sun's out, blue sky & comparatively mild after short overnight frost, a bit like Dustys by sound of it. A very big change in 24 hours. Hope the Northern contingent are OK, and at least have leccy. PPNot many weather problems around here, a few fences but that's it, I was watching a video with a plane landing at Birmingham, it was nearly flying sideways against the wind, not a flight I would care to be on.ArbitraryRandom said:Farway I think one of my Japanese quince (it's either Cido or Cido red - I can't remember which was planted where) is coming into bud. I appreciate it's not the same as a 'real' quince, but I love how bold it looks with masses of colourful flowers before any leaves (then later in the year huge fruits and no leaves like someone dumped a bag of apples into a dead hedge!).twopenny said:Yes Abs, I used to have a huge orangy red one that grew up the wall and visible from my breakfast table. It was a joy to see in the late winter mornings.I now have a white one that is potted at the end of my dull alley and it blooms prolifically and cheerfully. Supposed to be large Golden [yellow] edible fruit, if I'm still upright by then could be Quince jelly / jam, far into the future.I've yet to decide on a final home for it, but no immediate rush.Lovely Iris 2P, cheers the place up, unfortunately they're just squirrel food hereIf the sun keeps going and some warmth arrives, it could be Sedum digging up dayEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens9

Wind has died down here and the sky is blue, so I've just put the wash on. Seems to be the only thing I talk about recently, but there's very little that beats clean clothes that have been properly blown dry and it always seems a treat this time of year to get a gap in the weather to allow it.
I also think I'm going to take the opportunity to split my sage, which grew massive last year, and maybe pop in a few more broad beans.
Then I might make a cuppa and actually sit in the garden - get some vitamin d (another rare treat this time of year). The report says the high today is 8, but it actually feels quite warm in the sun. I'm sure I can cope with at least 10 mins while drinking a hot cuppa and listening to the birds...I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.7 -
Cold outside here (3C apparently), but sunny. Fence inspection has been done by my neighbour, and we've identified a LOT of rotten posts and horizontals. It'll help if we at least take the bottoms off the rotten posts so we can see which ones aren't actually doing anything useful. Priority sections have been identified, so hopefully he can start on it soon.
As the sun is shining, I'm going to go and do more clearing up in the garden, much to the disappointment of the dog, who thinks we should be going for a walk. Hopefully if I take a ball out for him, he'll be happy with that instead.10 -
Neighbour doing the fence Greenbee - bonusGiving you time to garden. Now I'm envious. And Abs sitting in the garden, things are looking upDon't loose the Sage though, it's good for medicine as well as cooking. Whitens teeth too so I'm told. Did try years ago.Farway, I think perhaps more of the Japonica. It's a lot more reliable than some with these constant storms.Do you reckon I could grow it as a tree? I've grown it up walls but never as a standard. Hmm looked it up and not really. It's still a multi stemmed bush.Bluey you sound full of beans. Hope it stays like that.I was around when Apraisals were introduced. As a staff we were annoyed but the lady I got refused to cooperate and she bought chocolate biscuits and coffee and we chattedOn the other hand there was one boss where I ended up insulting her! It was true. Really hit the spot. I knew my number was up but I couldn't let it pass. It just slipped out.Dusty that looks chillyOur sea only has a bit of a swell.Poppy, so glad you've come through, and with a nice evening too. Surprising once you can't do stuff how relaxing it isSunshine here but only 3c, climbed a bit but still coldNo storms, no real winds, no real floods. Just another winters day. But aparantly theres another on the way so there's still time.Been out and looked at the garden, had some grand ideas that I got from Montys British Gardens. And did nothing.Still feeling a bit crook and tired. Not up and at 'em enough to go out in the cold and deal with stuff.Staying still for a while I'm beginning to like my little house more. Greeting my Crow each morning, listening to the same owls (the new one still has a hicup and can't find a mate) and the sun shines right in on a winters day.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
