Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Awake since 4am listening to the wind howling outside. We had the emergency alert for the red weather warning on our phones yesterday - luckily DH's went off before mine so it wasn't too much of a shock - it still made me jump though as it was so loud. All schools are closed here, trains and buses off, shops shut, even funerals are cancelled. The red alert starts at 10am, so DH is going to see DD's pussycat well before then and will give him double portions so we don't have to go back today.
Sorry you're still feeling grim, twopenny. Does your Drs surgery do telephone consultations?? Not ideal, but when I had vertigo the second time it was useful to get a diagnosis and advice over the phone. The first time it happened I was deemed to be an emergency appointment after the telephone consultation so got a face to face appointment quite quickly. The only other thing I would suggest is the NHS 111 telephone service if you're worried, but you need the patience of a saint to go through that. Fingers crossed you're feeling better today.

twopenny said:Dusty you have the makings of a stumpery. That would be a fun thing to do with only the initial effort to stick them together. I'd love one of those, so good for the birds and beasts and ferns.Yes, but not there, and not with those stumps; they're too large to move. They'll be allowed to rot in situ, though. The stumpery/fern garden is going in a shady corner by the house, and we have smaller stumps maturing for that.Hope this storm with the unpronounceable name passes through without incident for all you folks up Norf.pink_poppy said:Dusty, you sound as busy as ever - hope you manage to get through your list of jobs. Ps don't tell anyone that we burn peat...
I also liked this mossy 'ring'...It must be an old motorbike tyre or similar. I can only offer the willow trunks from the fallen trees. They're somewhat mossy, and with added lichen:
Here, we've had 50mph+ and what sounded like a lot of rain, but no damage. The Christmas tree I placed in the field is nowhere to be seen, so it must've rolled to the other end overnight.

Glad you're sorted Poppy. I was thinking of you with all this alert, danger to life business. But you have a log burner do I remember?Oh and keeping warm. I must post photos of the thermal blind business, so quick and easy if not beautiful. Better warm than beautiful if there's a choice. And when single glazed I used to put clingfilm, moisten frame of window lightly and it will stick. It made some difference to the temperature. Again, not beautiful and there was a lot of blue air putting it up but worth doing. Again not beautiful but I find very few people visit at times when it's cold so there's that.Dusty, mosses and lichens are so beautiful. I feel I should learn more about them but then it's the mystery of ancient organisms that enhances the beauty. You've had wind? Well you know what I meanBit of rain last night but dried up this morning. Bit of wind so far but nothing exceptional.I went out to move pots at the front and I've stoppedd bothering to put the garden chairs back up with so many of these storms. They can lay on their backs till spring.Wish I could !

Another one here with 0400 wind whistling, but it's blown through now and may even get brighter later. I hope those Ooop North are faring OK, sounds nasty, but I suspect a bit of exuberance in reporting.twopenny said:Bit of rain last night but dried up this morning. I love a stumpery I do😻 unfortunately no room in my garden. Plenty of moss here, the front lawn is like a trampoline it’s that springy, I don’t mind as it’s green and better than weedy.
2p hope you are feeling better soon.
Pp take care up there, it’s not quite that bad here, and the sun is out 👏🏻 I’ve been to help Dd box up some books for book - cycle .Guess which mad woman put out her washing 😹 at least it is almost dry and I brought half in after a couple of hours.
You are a witty Lot ,you make me smile with your comments. Much nicer than all those thread that gripe about everything.
I am debating , wether to look in the garden or garage, see if there’s anything I can do. I get bored easily.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.8 -
I nipped out ,cut back the Ivy coming through from the field beyond ,gave the lavender an undercut. I did cut back after flowering, but it’s quite woody so pulled it back and got the underside woody stuff cut off.I also repaired the cats hideout in the garden, it’s where he shelters when the weather is bad and he’s outside. I reinsulated and wrapped more waterproofing over it.
Washing all in and dried apart from a couple of thicker bits, so that’s on the airer with the dehumidifier on.pFocus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.9 -
Its a good thing you're here Wort. You seem to be the only one getting to do any gardeningSun sort of out, no wind, feels cold even though it's 8c, the sea isn't foaming but massive rolls of waves so there's a storm somewhere.

Was woken up at around 1am with the wind, but glad to say the worst that's happened here is that I had to go half way down the road to recover my bin which had gone for a wander.
Still blustery and gusting so I've not been out for anything else. Have made a list of things to do over the next few months, and written down all the sowing dates for the things I'm planning on planting. This month is only more broad beans and chitting the potatoes, but March is a busy one so I must make sure not to agree to any work trips (priorities)
Quiet weekend here I think. Looking forward to the weather warming up soon
Farway I think one of my Japanese quince (it's either Cido or Cido red - I can't remember which was planted where) is coming into bud. I appreciate it's not the same as a 'real' quince, but I love how bold it looks with masses of colourful flowers before any leaves (then later in the year huge fruits and no leaves like someone dumped a bag of apples into a dead hedge!).I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.9
