Forgot to refresh... Lovely snowy pic, wort'A watched potato will never chit'...2

Dull & wet, if it was snow instead of mizzle it could look prettyNice moon + bobbly clouds YBE, I tried again last night without any luck.twopenny said:The spots on photos of sun or moon are 'flares' when you focus straight at the light source. Farway will know more and better.Love the sky in that one. Though it's a weird sky, wonder what it means?Farway forget cages for bulbs, it's supposed to be horse hair in the hole. And the next question is 'where do you get.........'I suppose you could try & get the blue dots to “point” in the direction of interest. Or just clone them out post-processing if you have the means & CBA.Hope boiler man was OK Dusty, mine is next Monday, gas though, but has expensive bits in it. A bit like MOTs with cars, you think it's OK, but there is some hidden expensive bit corroding away in there.Actually I'll be glad to see BM, the traitor was going to get a Heat Pump
, an offer he could not refuse, apparently. Just wondering if he went ahead & his verdict.
And I anticipate he will also put a new battery, safely, in my smoke alarm. Leaning over banisters is not recommended to those of us who are wobbly.Message from T & M, my Japanese anemones & seed are on the way, hopefully I can get them potted up by the weekend, just into outdoor sheltered pots for the winter I think while they settle downJust refreshed, some nice frosty photos, and Dusty's framed oneI have no recent ones, all grey, or clouds, but here's one from 2022, Winchester Cathedral, showing sun rays, right place & time, plus spot of framing, mono & OTEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens7 -

The boiler here was installed in 2015 along with a new system and has (so far!) used zero new parts other than the usual bits replaced annually and the anti-corrosion stuff. Oil boilers are somewhat more expensive than their gas cousins, though.I think we could convert to air source heat pump, perhaps with some modifications to a few radiators. Most of the house would be OK, as it's mostly heated by the wood burner. We might even be entitled to some sort of grant to convert, if when our 'lodgers' leave us.I was quite keen on the T&M Japanese anemone offer, until I saw the postage cost! I bought half a dozen s/h clothing items on the Bay to use on the 'farm' this winter, and they came here post free!OT. Reports of snow in Birmingham and on the Mendips. Temperature dropped from 9 to 4c this morning with sleet and rain. Blooming freezing!Wind must have changed while I was in the hot shower and sauna
Not quite so chilly.
Went to try and negotiate a chimney pot for canes for a table with local 'antiques' shop and he'll be round next week or thereafterBut he rang in a favour with a heating guy who may or may not come round and listen to the noises my heating makes. Of course getting it sorted is a whole other kettle of fish.
I;m not stopping to take any photos in this weather. Some lovely autumn colours still, many in the gutter now. Of course they are clearing out blocked drains as I type. Wait till it floods and then do it seems the phylosophy.I may just snuggle down when it gets dark shortly and watch GW which I've not seen for a while. It might brighten the day a tad.Meanwhile here's a duck house should anyone want ideasI can see Bluey in the market for one
and I;m sure Dusty has room on the edge of the stream by the dam
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Hello everyone,
I've been loving the pics recently - all the moody moon ones particularly. I took this one on Friday evening just before midnight - I was rather puddled so am quite happy with how it looks. Those specs are stars!!
the snow fell for me last night as I was going to bed - my garden and surrounding area looked lovely. I stuck my head out of the window and listened to the silence - it was a really peaceful way to end a day spent with my Mum (who has dementia and asks me the same question a hundred times a day)
Seeing the pic of Winchester Cathedral made me smile Farway - I visited there as a child in 1977 when we lived darn sarf (my dad was a matelot). I remember it was sinking and a diver had to go down and rebuild the foundations (or something)
I'm getting stuff together for my annual pomander making session. I invite loads of friends and provide hot drinks whilst we make gorgeous creations - all very MSE I charge a tenner and we use foraged greenery and they look a million dollars. My 82 year old neighbour and I used to go foraging with tarpaulins and loppers but it'll just be me this year as she fell a year ago and hurt her hip. She is gutted!
the talk of felling the old oak made me feel sad - I hate the thought of losing those beautiful majestic things. I drove through Sheffield recently and they felled a lot of trees last year and gosh it looked bleak. A gorgeous Victorian avenue with no tree canopy just felt so very wrong.
2P I am hoping that my little growing area will deliver the goods on apples (and plums) over the next few years - I've been doing a bit of investigating as to what type is going to work in pots. I've made loads of apple butter this year with apples from the community orchard. Am definitely getting a list going of things I can do next year.
Those hedges look like a lot of hard work Dusty I adore a traditional hedge so reckon they're worth every minute you invest. I've got a privet hedge down one side of my garden and cut it maybe three times a year - I love seeing the birds dart in and out of it.
Not much going to be happening in my garden until after Sunday - once the pomanders are done I wills weep the detritus off the patio and pop everything to bed for the winter. Snow was forecast tomorrow but it seems to have morphed into just rain so it'll be sludgy out there whatever happens.
Wishing everyone a snuggly warm evening

So I went back three pages thinking I must have posted before then, nope, four. You lot talk too much but keep the pictures comingThat's an awful lot fo work with a chainsaw Dusty. I do love the idea of people using hand tools to do it but that is even more work and sometimes, faster is better
I do have a Co monitor and the sweep is now rebooked for December 2nd. I don't think there'a naything wrong with it, it's just me and the speed of adding logs. I expect Farway knew because he is a) psychic and b) you come across as a no nonsense cheese and pickle type guy. Is it a bird or plane? No, it's Dusty taking photo's...
Good detective work Farway, who'd a thunk a cheese and pickle sandwich?! I've seen a few of those moving things, and yes, they are quite creepy. Damn shame about the trees too. Fab monochrome pic! That's a fab blurry squirrel 2P, and such a sense of satisfaction from clearing up. I am basking in the glory of having made my compost heap and dug a bit of earth [ last week mind, this week is a whole lot of nothing...]ybe, yeah, the coffee is always better..I've got Lavazza Oro for my percolator, but Sains used to do a really good colombian one [fair trade in a green pack] How lovely your garden is still blooming...no viewfinder here either but I did have a girls world I turned into a punk during late punk which I was not aware of at the time. And thanks to my ministrations it was clear I'd never be a hairdresser.Forsty thistles, lovely!! I can't even type it let alone say it!wm, lovely pomander, it's got attitudinous...I'd be pleased ot have one of those hanging by me..Sner today, big fat flakes that didn't stick [ boo!] and bloody cold. That is all...Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi7 -
Your Winchester photo reminds me of a wee 'snicket' in Whitby, Farway. It's just down from the whalebones, YBE might know where it is. You walk through it in darkness and at the end it opens up and you have a lovely view of the harbour and abbey.
I'd be interested in what your BM has to say about the heat pump. I passed by one humming away the other day - they're just so ugly and quite noisy for the immediate neighbours I thought. I will never take 'central heating' for granted ever again thoughI did think about getting oil installed here, Dusty, but it seems to be frowned upon now, so it's heat pump or updated storage heaters. I love our stove, but it only heats one room, the rest of the house is freezing.
Very cute duck house, twopenny
Your pomander is lovely W_M, what a nice idea to have friends over to make them, I think I'd be tempted to make hot mulled wine to go with them, although that might affect the finished articlesLovely moon pic too.
taff, you were up late/early. I had the nicest cup of coffee I've ever had in a hotel in York - all I know is that it was a South American bean.
Bird photos alert... I don't think these were the same mistle thrushes that were eating my holly berries?? These were smaller and I thought I could see a bit of colour, so wondered if they were Redwings...
And I thought the robin blended in quite well...
The same robin flew down onto my bird bath - not sure why the photo is 'stippled', but I thought it looked like a painting...
Apologies for all the photos - I do love my birds
OT - it's bloomin' cold again. White with frost, but no snow at least.
'A watched potato will never chit'...8 -
Properly cold here, like actual bone-chilling cold. Feels like is -9
It's the wind making it worse no doubt, but there's no heat out there at all at all.
I'm not a bit surprised you've got a billhook Dusty, but quicker and easier is better sometimes eh. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's it's.. hang on I know this one... I've seen that before... ah whatdya call it... stop interrupting me while I'm thinking man.. oh aye - it's the sun
We only got the briefest dusting of snow wort, a few sprinkles that stayed on the grass for a wee while and then it was gone. There's some cracking pictures about though of people who got a proper amount. Gawd I do love really frosty crisp days, as long as the wind drops and the sun's out. My favourite
Very atmospheric cathedral pic Farway, you can feel the coolness of it. That's daddy's old stomping ground actually, when he was working still, teaching bad boys the error of their ways. I should clarify and say he was in the prison service, in case that could be read differently
Ooh I'd love that duck house 2p! Actually I'd quite like everything in your picture. I'll stick it down the bottom of my garden and add a sitooterie and that'll be me contentedFingers crossed the heating guy does come and works some magic. How did your chimney pot negotiations go...?
I'm looking forward to pomander making wm, I just need to get some bits together. Weather forecast reckons 14' for Sunday
Thanks for the coffee tip taff, I'll keep my eye out for it. Lavazza is lovely coffee in general eh. I'll have to root about in the loft and find my percolator. Enjoy yer sner, and hopefully the next lot sticks :fingerscrossed:
I love your bird pics pp, and I think whatever the stippling effect is makes it more appealing actually. Not a bit wonder you made it to the front page, and I bet you will again too
Jeez I've been that long writing this that the sun is now up and it's only -1 with a feels like of -7. The drunkards were right yesterday btw, it was watery sunshine and dry. Today they've given rain showers this morning and sunny this aft, with a top temp of 2' with a feels like of -3'. Better this than damp and wind and rain though. Snow is expected in 44 minutes say the sobers! Oooh giggidyI removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.6 -
As you're a bit far from me WM, can you recommend any YT videos or similar for pomander making? It looks like a great idea!
Feels like is -6 here at the moment. Felt like a lot less at 6.30am when the cats woke me up to let them out and I then had to take the puppy out and stand around while he decided to have a wee!
All the cosmos are now dead, so once I have a bit of time I'll have to cut those down (which then means those bits of the borders can be weeded and mulched). It may be a bit late for mulching, but better than not bothering at all. Plus I need the big compost bin emptied as the small one needs turning into it.
Not much gardening being done since the puppy arrived last week. They're a bit time-consuming at this stage. But he is making sure I get outside lots, so more exercise and vitamin D!5 -
A fine picture of the moon there, WM, with a bit of artistic flare, as explained by Farway.
With no development costs on digital, it's always best to have a go and see what happens, eh?
And I'm delighted you think I'm a no-nonsense type, taff. I thought I was too, but some have me wearing a hat made of tinfoil because I question popular narratives.Still, it happens with eminent people on other controlled media too, not just the 'nutters' like me!
Cheese & pickle is a good choice of sandwich when forced to buy one out and about, if only because it's hard forthe mass-producers to mess-up.
I'd happily have a duck house 2p, but I'd put chickens in it. Ducks are way too messy, though I like them in other people's properties. If heating is making noises it's usually caused by air in the system, or if only when it starts up, pipes expanding and rubbing against something. I quite like the latter, as it reminds me, it's time to get up!Laying a hedge with a billhook (preferably a vintage one!) is very satisfying, Bluey, but modern battery chainsaws can have quite a delicate touch, and I've used mine for that. It's quicker, of course, but results aren't quite as controlled. Now, with flail cutting on the road hedge being essential, I find laying superfluous, and the hazel seems to do better anyway. The hedge is pretty thick and sheep proof there, and our guy goes slowly, so doesn't make the mess contractors charging by the length cut tend to do.I'm struggling to see any red on your redwings pp, but ours haven't turned-up yet, so I'm out of practice! All I know is birds don't always loo like they're supposed to! I like and can positively ID your pointillist robin.
We've had no snow, and 'they' say it was only -1c last night. The hen's water froze, suggesting 'they' underestimated, but now it's blue sky and the ice is melting fast.I'm not looking at the tomatoes in the polytunnel yet, though! I wonder how these guys at Rosemoor fared.....
