We're not going as far as Cyprus pp, just down to Portugal
Really very pleasant etc neighbours are the same but I can't put much on here because it's so specific they'd easily identify themselves. Anyway. Tip for anyone who needs a holiday - this is a cheap time of year to go, evidently. Not school hols, not christmas season etc. We've got 8 days away, flights + hotel + transfers etc for £600 total. Bargain! Fingers crossed DH's soar frote is only a cold.
Dusty I will take that car, even if it is 5 doors, and someone elses :lol Mind I was reading on the news there's plenty of overtime money going on the NHS so if nurse works through the lunch hour they can just go buy another oneI bet that 'reg plate' would be worth more than the car! With a bit of luck your new neighbour will be a decent person who understands how things work
Housing comments have gone, surprisingly
I like your anemones too wm. Considering you've not be long at it your garden looks very settled and established
That's a brilliant poem 2p, I love a bit of whimsical nonsenseI'm beginning to think I won't get a Swift, scarlet or blue or any other colour
Doesn't make any sense really to hold out for one fairly rare thing when for less money I could get a better car. Even if that would be a grey fiesta or summat. The money they want for blue swifts in decent nick is just crazy *sigh* How did you get on with your rasp Kia?
Yous make me wish I had a proper fire, and wood to chop and stack. I love the smell of freshly cut wood. Did fat bumblebee wiggle back into his home taff? You'll deffo find your proper hatchet now you've bought another one, naturally  I dread to think what Cissie’s karma is like, she isn’t unfair but she doesn’t pull her punches. She absolutely is my role model
Do anemones self seed wort? Could you move the pot round the garden at the right time of year so they spit out all over the place? Or maybe do the 50/50 thing? Put some in your garden and leave the other half in their pot…?
OT still nothing moving weatherwise. Still, grey, cloudy, neither cool nor warm. It is currently 12' which is half the temp of (one of my fave places) Marmaris.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.6 -
I've just spotted your post, pp. Now I feel daft, not recognising who you were speaking of earlier!
Though not a fan of NC, I like some versions of P J Harvey, who reinvents herself sporadically, and there is, or was, a collaborative & romantic link!
Maybe taff would know too.
Japanese anemones don't usually seed, but they multiply vigorously when happy. We had to 'control' ours here, but I did that too well, and there's not much left.We definitely had 'fretty' yesterday; a great word to add to our extensive vocabulary of regional weather words here.Today, I've been seeing odd patches of blue sky and even non-forecast sunshine, so it's better than first supposed.
Bluey, we'll be happy if our new farming neighbour is a real farmer, not someone who rents out the land with no personal hands-on involvement...even if they're a bit curmudgeonly!Hope DH and all those posting here with lingering lurgy and muscular twinge-itis soon mend. Maybe, once we break free of this interminable grey, eh?"There is no such thing as a low-energy rich country." Dr Chris Martenson. Peak Prosperity6 -
Still interminable grey here, plus a bit of fretty wet in the air.I'm a bit later today, Annual Nurse MOT, I'm still alive and all is working as expected, no advisories issued, not even the standard overweight one.Perhaps it's like older cars, after a certain vintage some things are allowed, like carp emissions, no indicators etc?I did mention my wonky knees, she said if it persists, ask Dr for some alternative "stuff" to rub in instead of Ibopr. Nice to know there may be NHS Embrocation.Spotted opposite Dr, a new Indian Smashburger shop.It used to be a chippy, but Covid lockdown closed it. Nice to see a new shop, even if I have no idea what a smash burger is or how it differs from a normal donkey burger.I am extremely unlikely to try one anyway, but never say never, as the saying goes. Perhaps they will be giving them away for a trial taster?I've always fancied going to Portugal, YBE, have a nice break and hope Himselfs froat clears upGood luck with new neighbour Dusty, let's hope it's not some tax break farmerTook some pics of my nasturtiums, and fuchsia still in flower, still have to process themEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens5

That goes for everyone else on this thread, too!
My occasional large conflagrations are an embarrassment, but they can't be helped, without a DEFRA grant for a good-sized chipper.
NHS embrocation? It seems the word is mostly linked to veterinary products these days. 'Liniment' brings more human-focused results, though not necessarily better ones. There's a product meant for equine use which apparently works a treat. I wouldn't know, but I'm not a neigh-sayer.What would NHS liniment be called? 'Bevan's Balm, perhaps?
Or how about Streeting's Slippery Salve? One has to be so careful with words these days. Your Smash Burger is a good example. Put the two words together and you have a brand. Keep them apart and it's a free for all.
Since there's a dearth of gardening content today, I'll share the news that 3 packs of choice seeds arrived in our post box today.l can only give Latin names for two of them, but the first, Persicaria orientalis, is also known as "Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate." It's an annual which may grow over 6' tall.
Sorry Great Dixter, you're one of several suppliers, but the seed is hard to find.Peucedanicum verticillare is the second plant I've wanted fresh seed for. Like the Persicaria, it needs overwintering outdoors to break dormancy. Monocarpic, but should may self-seed.The last packet of seed is of Heptaptera triquetra. Not perhaps a plant for those with false teeth. Hardest of all to find, but the RHS has a clue, though few details. It's another umbel, but not too humble, being allegedly 'glowing yellow' in flower and seed. We'll see! As a politician,, not particularly dear to my heart, once almost said, "Germination, germination, germination."The sunshine here didn't last.We had about 15 minutes. By the time I shot these American oak leaves, it was dull and hazy again, but thankfully, not fretty.

Portugal is somewhere I'd like to go too - hope you have a lovely time when you get there, YBE
I don't think I know any PJH songs, Dusty. I know she did backing vocals on a Queens of the Stone Age song 'I wanna make it wit Chu' (yep, that's how it's spelt) which I love. I googled her and the NC connection came up - apparently she ditched him because of drugs and infidelity (on his part).
Glad you're fit and well (apart from creaky knee), Farway. I've never heard of smash burger either.
I've been out for two walks today... first one was through the village and unfortunately there was some gathering going on and it was chock full of cars, The second one was by the loch and unfortunately someone nearby had a huge smoky fire going, so that wasn't great either. Oh well, I got a couple of photos...
OT - weather was a bit meh, but at least I remembered to wear my hat...'A watched potato will never chit'...7 -
Nice pics both - I'll spoil the thread now with some rather less pretty shots of my potato experiment which some may remember I set up earlier this year (and had somehow failed to get round to completing until today, despite the tops having died down probably a couple of months ago at least...).The expt, inspired by something similar that @ArbitraryRandom was doing, was to test the suggestion that indeterminate potatoes will produce several layers of potatoes if repeatedly earthed up in a container - I planted one determinate (well, 3 small tubers) of a first early - Foremost - at the bottom of one dustbin, and an indeterminate maincrop - Sante - one tuber only as I didn't have more to spare - in another. Result - poor crops from both (I earthed up c. 2 or 3 times after the initial covering with the scrapings from an old manure heap, and didn't water or look after much - and all my potato harvests were carp this year
) - and both had all the tatties in one layer at the bottom of the bin - Foremost foremost, Sante following...
Or not - my phone uploaded these all in the wrong order and I can't seem to rearrange - willow basket is Foremost crop, full dustbin is Sante, to show level to which both bins were filled, 3rd pic is Sante tatties, all still half-buried in compost at bottom of bin, wire basket is Sante harvest, last is Foremost potatoes, all together at bottom of bin... with apologies for poor editing skills...Weather was dull yet again, but not quite so dull as of late, and with a fretty breeze (possibly misappropriating that word), so it felt rather chilly at times...8 -
Good to hear you came through your MOT with no advisories and acceptable emissions etc Farway. Did they ask you if you might be pregnant? I hope you answered honestly "well I can't say for sure as I haven't actually done a test"
Hopefully 'Bevan's balm/Sweeting's Slippery salve' (<snigger Dusty>) will be just the ticket
I've never heard of a SmashBurger nor a smash burger. Will you go try one for the sake of furthering our collective knowledge...?
I'm giving up clicking seed links, I just want everything and I've no roomAren't your oak leaves beautiful, they've a glow to them like they're lit from within
Lovely autumnal pics pp, do you feel better for getting 2 walks in?
That's a queer tatty harvest Less... will you do it differently next year? More watering? Talking to them nicely like wot Lugs does? (I know this isn't the point but I like your wicker basket - looks like a proper jobber does that) How did you fair @ArbitraryRandom?
OT well it's light now but it was dark and the rest is the same as it was. In other news Merlin bird app is being useful atm. I was putting the rubbish out last night before bed and there was the most almighty skreeching noise, loud as if someone was sat on my back doorstep, which apparently was a long-eared owl. Then first thing morning there was a different sort of gentler screeching with what I thought was a really early robin, my phone said they were a tawny owl and a redwing. I’ll have to ask Lovely Neighbour to put out bird food next week…I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.7 -
I wonder where AR has got to??
Well done on the tatties, Less, they look pretty decent to me. Let us know what you think of the taste of each variety.
Apart from breathing in acrid smoke, I enjoyed the second walk better than the first, YBE. Are you back to perambulating with Handsome on a Thursday?? I need a wee dug to take for a walk. There was a dog walker in front of me yesterday with two black dogs - one Labrador and the other a Spaniel, I think. They were soooo happy to be out and running after balls the owner was throwing for them
Forecast for today is sunny spells with a gentle breeze. I'm going to attempt hanging some washing outside...'A watched potato will never chit'...8 -
Aye I am pp. It was a beautiful walk yesterday, I got some pics and everything
Have you got a dog's home near you? You could volunteer as a walker.... Or just happen to be walking in a lovely place while other people are out with their own dogs? You'll often get a free go on a dog doing that
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.6 -
Forgot to say about the owls. I LOVE owls
When we were renting here I saw a huge owl fly onto the neighbour's roof - I think it was the first time I'd seen an owl. Then a few weeks later DH and I saw two fluffy owlets that had just fledged when we were out for a walk in the woods - I think that was my best wildlife moment ever
I don't know what the first big owl was, but the owlets were tawny.
