Like many others - only keep receipts for expensive items and things I've posted until I know they've reached their destination.
  • Receipts are largely redundant these days.  Use your bank's mobile app to alert you automatically of any purchases made on your card. It is virtually instantaneous, I hear my phone notification ping at the checkout before the receipt has been handed to me.

I  keep receipts for long enough to check the credit card statement. Then longer term I keep the ones for items that I would need for the guarantee if there was a problem. And before anyone says you just need proof of purchase, I know that but waving a receipt at someone is far easier.
I have a certain amount a week to spend on food/general stuff. I use the receipts to make sure I'm not going over that and to track spending. I'm aware that I could use the online banking to do this, but this is what works for me.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I highly doubt most retailers would accept that as proof of purchase if you need to return an item.

Some shops (Argos, Apple) now offer receipts via email. Easier for more purchases as can just keep in a separate folder rather than have a piece of paper that is more likely to get thrown out.
It's a way of collecting your email information - personally I ask for a printed receipt, as there's also no guarantee the email will be added correctly.

I also shred receipts, I don't just bin them.

The vast majority will accept a credit card statement as proof of purchase. They can cross check it with the transaction details they have and pull up a full receipt. I first used this for an Xbox 360 that got a red ring of death way back in 2007 so it's hardly new technology!

I get every receipt to scan on the cashback apps, zipzero/ storewards / shoppix. I then add them to my accounts spreadsheet for bank rec. I hold onto large purchases and clothing receipts until the returns/ guarantee date runs out, all other receipts are binned.

Only for big purchases or something with a guarantee. For routine low value things only foreign spending which I check off against the bill then bin.

I did say largely redundant, not completely redundant.  I see no point in keeping the vast majority as a means to check statement.  Mobile notifications will tell you instantly if transactions are being carried out without your knowledge.
