Cold call for re-inspecting loft insulation

Comments

  • I've had the same cold calls, and have never had any loft insulation installed under a grant scheme, they really are just cold calls, not linked in any way to any previous work.  I'm also registered with the TPS not to receive marketing calls, so have tried to get the company name out of the caller to report to the ICO.

Funnily enough they get a bit cagey when asked to identify themselves...

They claim to be doing a survey which is exempt from the TPS rules (or so they claim) - That is the reason I pursued it to the point of getting a surveyor sales oik round before giving him a stern lecture on TPS rules and honest business practices.

They want to waste your time, waste theirs in return. And once you can confirm the company name, report them to the ICO.

If you are registered with the Telephone Preference Service, then cold calling you is illegal.

From the TPS web site -

Does the TPS stop all unwanted calls?

No. Our remit only covers live unsolicited sales or marketing calls. We can’t prevent other call types, such as recorded/automated messages, silent calls, market research, overseas companies, debt collection, scam calls, nuisance and abusive calls, and so on.

Registration with the TPS doesn’t physically restrict a telephone line, so it can’t stop anyone from dialling a number. Calls from friends and family or any other calls where the caller is not selling a product or service, are not subject to TPS restrictions.

Service-related calls from banks, credit card companies and so on are not subject to TPS restriction.

The bold italic is the cop-out they use. They claim to be offering a "free" survey of your loft and may throw in some BS about fibreglass "no longer fit for purpose" and deny that it is a marketing call.

  • They must be back in business.
A very slick presentation from a well spoken man on 01202 143609.
Same spiel, old types of insulation can cause mould but there are newer products.
Computer records show that homes like mine had the sort of material concerned.
Most affected homes in my area had already been surveyed and dealt with and so on.
What was my age group? He seemed to lose interest when I said "yes" to over 80.

I had a call from the same number and just hung up on the caller.
  • Had this cold call both at my home and my girlfriends, several times always 01202, then last number varies. Generally don't pick up on numbers we don't know, but answered one call at girlfriends house.
Called himself "Chris", the "local energy advisor". Said house was on a list of properties with insufficient insulation, then proceeded to ask what type of loft insulation we had. (You'd think if we were on his "list" already he'd know!). Didn't tell him!
I asked him who had supplied him with this "list", at this point he asked if I was "the householder", I said "no I'm a friend", he then said goodbye and terminated the call.

Other than hanging up on cold callers, if they say "Mr xxxxx?"  I ask who wants to know.  Almost invariably they hang up at that point.
  • Like other ignore it. Either scam or they tell you horror stories even if it ok. If you are concerned get a local trusted trader in that you approach
  • I've just had another phone call about this (I had one last year) - 'We're in the area..... Free inspection and replacement... government scheme.'  I said 'No thank you, I think I'll let my husband deal with that!'.....   I'm making a note of the date and time of the call and the number and putting the number in the list of 'barred callers' - those lists aren't long enough these days!
