Debit Card transaction limits

Hi,
I am buying a car on Saturday.
I would prefer to pay by Santander Debit Card. Can anyone please confirm 123 account Debit Card transaction limit. I believe it is £10,000? I cannot find it on their website and Santander do not answer their telephone.
I also have current accounts with RBS, TSB and NW. Can anyone please confirm what their Debit Card transaction limits are?

In theory £25k, but in practice whatever the amount is in your account + your overdraft (if any).

So I’ve done more again buying a car; garage pops card in card machine; the card machine then gave a number to call. I’d paid a deposit off £500 the week before via app from this account. I explained it was for car purchase on phone; it was Santander lite 123, they wanted me to to go through security to confirm it was me but I paid a balance of £11,500 using my debit card. Took a few minutes but was straight forward enough this was March 2019. I then taxed car online using same card before driving home. It’s worth asking them though, if you are expecting to use the app to transfer it might be a different story, I think they do limit that as do most to my knowledge.

I bought my car with a debit card and although I'd never spent more than about £20 on it previously it went through without incident. This was before the text verification scheme came in though.

I paid way more than £20k for a car, in a reputable car dealership, with my Santander debit card. Same experience as Catplan. They will allow you to spend as much as you have in your account using the card.
  • These days I do not think there is an upper limit on debit card transactions.
I think some of the above posters were mixing up Faster payment limits with debit card ones.
  • I paid just over £10,000 for a car using my Santander debit card two years ago. Went straight through fine.

No bank should (our reps get a nasty shock if they do) conform their card limits as it is a security risk if fraudsters got hold of the figure.
But as per above Santander will be fine on £10K

  • You may find that some dealerships will only accept a Bank Transfer for payments now..but they will normally specify this in their paperwork about how to pay for your car :)

Me too. I've spent way more than £10k on a Santander debit card with no problems whatsoever.

If they did that to me I would walk!
It could be a sign of financial pressures on the company.
Pay for that car by bank transfer today - get there tomorrow to pick up the car and find the premises locked up and empty - result = loss of money and car.
Pay by debit card result = chargeback your money back and go somewhere else for a car.
