My 5 year old son has an iPad, there is a password on there to prevent purchases. However, he has been able to make some in app purchases on some apps he likes using. He has spent £1110 in 3 weeks, as soon as I have noticed this, I’ve gone back in to security and ensured it is locked down. Now there is no password required I’ve stopped any in app purchases being allowed.
i have contacted apple as that is a legit reason to request a refund, they won’t help due to apps being third party owned or something? They told me my bank would help. They said they would, then said they couldn’t and I had to log it as fraud. Happy to do that as I didn’t authorise the payments. Now they say they won’t treat it as fraud and there’s nothing I can do.
is this really the case? I didn’t authorise the payments and I cannot survive being £1110 out of pocket! Any help greatly appreciated
Really hard for a parent when this happens and they realise how easy it is for someone of that age to spend real money. Kids are so good on these devices that they can defeat what some parents do.
I have seen far to many of these. And know how distressing it is.

1st thing to do is go back to Apple and tell them this is a 5 year old that has done it without permission. So long as it is the 1st time it has happened they will refund. If not complain and say you will take it further.
They do refund, have seen it many times, even amounts over yours.
You bank can't deal with it as fraud as it is a member of your household that has done it. In effect with your permission as you gave them the device. Even if they did, then apple would simply block the account and all devices linked to it.
As to any dispute on the payments. That is also a no as again it is a device you gave them.

Another point that many people overlook. Is you do not have to enter any card details in when setting up a i-tunes account. Simply skip that part.

"some zoo tap thing"?  Don't you know what you downloaded onto the ipad?

I think it's time to consider whether an ipad is a suitable toy for a 5 year old. There are sometimes good reasons why they can be extremely helpful to some children, but leaving your 5 year old son to play games unsupervised on an expensive piece of tech with internet access is just bad parenting.
I wasn’t aware this was a site for bashing others? If I wanted parental advice, I’d be asking. You either don’t have a 5 year old and a full time job and another 5 year old to look after, or you’ve forgotten how that is. Obviously he doesn’t have free use of an iPad with the internet, there are restrictions on it, that’s my point, there IS a password on there and the apps on there are only apps for children. It is set up as a child device. His school encourage the use as they post all updates to an app on the iPad. So don’t start with the lecturing. The point of this forum is to HELP and advise, if you can’t do either, then scroll on. It’s fairly straightforward.
  • Seems to me that it is the parents that need help and advise not the kids.
My grandaughter knows more about ipads and phones than I ever will (she is 7!)

How is a cheap android any different? He doesn’t have an iPhone, it’s an iPad. In the home, doesn’t leave the home. I don’t understand what would be any different if it were android?

It doesn’t help now, but make sure you delete your card details in your apple account, and if you want to buy any apps just buy a pre paid apple app card from a shop and add that to your account, I hope you get a refund.

The big difference is not the operating system.  It's that the new phone or tablet wouldn't have your credit card details stored on it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

And you are free to ignore my posts or even put me on your ignore list (you can do that on this forum).

Yes, I've raised two children whilst working without needing to worry about unauthorised spending on the internet because I didn't allow them unsupervised and unfettered access to IT kit at the age of 5.  Is the school really encouraging the use of Roblox and "some zoo tap thing" , because they don't sound educational to me.  You presumably downloaded and installed them, even though, to the best of my knowledge, neither are part of the primary curriculum, so pretending the ipad is solely an educational tool is stretching things somewhat.

You may not like my lecturing, but it's justified.  You wouldn't be here otherwise.  Even if you get this problem resolved, how are you going to prevent it again if you won't heed justified criticism?  Delete the stupid games and allow your son to use the iPad for what you claim is its intended educational purpose.
Calm down, Beyoncé! Not once did I say it was solely for educational purposes...re-read. I said that the school encourage use of an iPad, due to covid they are uploading work and communications onto an app, do you want a screen shot as proof? LMAO! before you start with the high and mighty perfect parent stuff, I have been very responsible, there is a password on there, the only games on there are for children, only websites intended for children are authorised and quite frankly, it’s nothing to do with you, I asked for advice on whether there was a route I could take to get a refund, apple themselves have a reason for refund “child made unauthorised purchase” we can’t all be perfect like yourself, maybe you should start your own app on how to parent and do life so wonderfully without ever having any issue, idk?
anyhoo, cheers for your rant, keep safe, ciao, kisses
