Do I replace this tyre

Just replaced drive shaft on my 325 MSport and noticed this cut in the tyre tread which looks like a stone has gone into it. The tyres on this are 255/30/19 run flats so are expensive to replace.
Opinions sought from you all as to whether you would replace the tyre or leave as is for a while?

Doesn't look the tread on those is that deep either. It won't be repairable as it's too near the shoulder of the tyre so I'd be inclined to replace it sooner than later. If it were me I'd also replace the other side too as it's best to replace tyres in pairs, unless the other is fairly new. Depends on how risk adverse you are but I never mess about when it comes to tyres.
  • I will admit that that edge is starting to look a bit worn. Inside edge so never really see it when I’m checking the tyres. I agree can’t beat the expense of a BMW 😂

I would replace both sides so they match. Just trying to gauge when I need to spend £400 🙈

Tell me about it. Just dropped off my 4 year old 120d MSport for what was supposed to be just an oil service and MOT, only to be informed that it's a "major" oil service, whatever the difference, and even though they're only charging £39 for the MOT the total will come to over £450 😲

I suppose I can't complain though, this is only it's second service in 4 years and I did choose to take it to the main dealer.

I know what you mean. Had an issue with ABS sensor on mine, ended up having the drive shaft replaced as it was so corroded the reluctor ring wasn’t round anymore. My trusted Indy did the work so I said do a major service while it’s in. Spark plugs cost over £100 for replacements 🙈

Turn the steering to full lock to check the full width of the fronts.
Bend down, and look at the rears under the bumper.

Another vote here for "that damage is just the final straw..."

Look likes I may be in the same boat. Just got a video back from my local BMW and they've seen a cut around the centre on one of my rear tyres, which they say will fail the MOT.

If the cut is bad enough to fail, then whether it'll fail is the least of the concerns.
"When assessing cuts in a tyre, it is permissible to check whether a cut is deep enough to reach the ply or cord by using a blunt instrument to open the cut taking care not to cause further damage.

The following criteria should be used when assessing a cut in a tyre:

    • any ply or cord that can be seen without touching the tyre - fail
    • if by folding back rubber or opening a cut with a blunt instrument, so as not to cause further damage, exposed ply or cord can be seen irrespective of the size of the cut - fail
    • if a cut which is more than 25mm or 10% of the section width whichever is the greater, is opened with a blunt instrument and cords can be felt but not seen - fail"

  • Always astounds me that people look to save money on trying to avoid replacing a defective item which is the only contact the vehicle has with the road and which ultimately is what keeps you on it.
