  • Which have just brought out their latest report on sat navs and the tom tom go 520 does come out best but the lesser known Garmin Nuvi 660fm rates well but pricey at £300. The Garmin StreetPilot C510 Deluxe is really well rated and only £180. Just been checking them out and trying to find them cheaper and came across their nuvi 250 in pink. :)

  • I thought my days of satnav hunting were over when I got A Road Angel 7000 in the Next sale in the summer.... reduced from £250 to £160. Unfortunately, a bit like my bloke, it's temperamental, unpredictable and rarely does what I want it to. So they have told me to send it back and they will refund me (can't replace it as they no longer do the model) and I now get to buy a new one (wish I could do the same with my bloke.....:rotfl: )

The thing that I liked about the road angel (when it worked) was it had speed camera alerts and also in the box it came with a car holder which attached to the windscreen and plugged into the ciggie lighter and a seperate home charger.

I've looked at various others in a similar price range and although most give indications on the maps etc and techie stuff it doesn't say what you actually get in the box. Do they all come packaged like the road angel or should I expect just a charger and have to buy the camera download and the car holder as an extra??

    thanks for any help
  • Amazon are selling the Tomtom 1 Europe version 3 with european maps in addition to the usual UK ones - it also includes speed camera locations. All for the bargain price of £129.99 and at the moment delivery is free using their super saver service.

    I've just bought one!

  • Does anyone think it's worth waiting until Jan sales to buy any sat nav though? I have the cash but can wait (just).

Firstly please slate it if its not a good system.

Secondly I know there was a company called Evesham that went bump recently and does anyone know if this the same company who have started up again as I am a bit wary.

Saw a review on this at

Full reviewI am the sterotypical woman driver - Fact. I do drive a lot of miles and once I've been somewhere I can normally find it again. My problem lies when I am going somewhere new. I can study maps and trace out the route I should be taking and feel confident but somehow it just looks different in reality!!. I tried multimap and found this helps but still gave me too much room for going wrong. My long suffering co-pilot and friend got used to going round round-a-bouts a few times before I decided which exit to take. She dropped several hints to me about getting a sat nav but I thought that they would be far to complicated and expensive so decided against it.
On a shopping trip to ASDA one day I spotted the Evesham N20 UK on sale for £80 I thought that looked a pretty good bargain so asked about it. The assistant said Oh you just plug it in and thats it - So I took the plung and bought it.
When I got out to the car I opened it up. In the box was a nice compact black unit, a holder which suckers onto your window, a charger, 2 books and a minidisk.
I stuck the holder onto the window plugged the charger in and looked for the on switch.
On the top of the unit is the power on button but on the back is a master which has to be sliden across before first use. I was wondering what I could use to poke it along when I spotted a little grip in the corner, I slide this to discover a little pointer, using this my unit now powered up. The front screen gives three options Navigation, GPS reciever and travel kit.
I opted for navigation and it brought up a picture of the UK with my location at the bottom along with a card symbol and and exit sign.
clicking the card symbol I was taken to page giving options to find my destination, by address, postcode, recent or favourites.
I typed in my postcode and then into an new screen which gave me navigate to my delight it started to tell me the way home. using a + and - symbol I zoomed in and out and off we went. It took me the long route home but once I read all the book I changed the settings so It gives me the shortest route. I do change between this as sometimes It will take back roads rather than motorways so the quickest option is best. The voice is easy to understand and directions are given well ahead of actually having to do them, and then repeated just before. One thing I still laugh at as if you are to follow a road for more than about 15 miles it just says" follow the course of the road for a while" in a totally laid back fashion. Should you take another road instead of the one it suggests it quickly has a rethink and plans the new route, alternatively you get the "as soon as possible make a u turn" message. It also alerts to speed cameras giving a loud ping and the screen displays speed camera 100 yards. It doesn't differentiate which side of the road they are on however. In the top left of the screen is a little direction display which tells you which way you are to go and how much further until you need to do something else. it also gives your speed, journey time and distance to destination.
The other two functions on the start up menu is a GPS locator which gives you your exact position ( handy if the car breaks down but I cant see any other point to it) and the travel kit this has all the main settings, back light volume etc. The only bad point I have for this is actually clipping it onto the holder. I find this quite akward and fidely. In either side is a little slit and on one side of the holder is a tab which you slot into one side and on the other is a thumb tab which you have to push back to get it to clip into the other side. It is getting better but initally it was a knightmare (especially with nails!!)
I really have found this and excellent device and since getting this I have never been lost again!!! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a basic Sat Nav, It doesn't play movies,MP3's or do anything special but it just gives clear directions. I am travelling from Scotland to Birmingham for a big cat show later in the year a journey I was dreading but now with my trusty friend I'm sure we'll get there in one piece!!!

I have had a number of Road Angel Safety;) Camera Detectors and they have been priceless in their function. I appreciate whet you say about the RA 7000 being no longer available but the RA 9000 has got fantastic reviews and is the latest model (If you like Road Angel this could be for you) As I am a Which subscriber I know that there has been 3 various types of reviews this year so far and outside of the RA 9000 there are two that I am currently looking at. Snooper Syrius 600 + (Very user friendly and camera updates as well) Costing around £220 - £240 and the Garmin Nuvi 660fm which also rates very well. I would like the RA 9000 but it's a bit pricey (but does everything you want of it) and if I can get the Snooper Syrius 600+ for the right price I will have one by the weekend cos I have just sold my New Road Angel.
