There's loads of them, the obvious ones and the less obvious. On the marriage and family there are often spurious posts, from brand new users and copy and pasted from mumsnet. 
The latest has already been deleted on mumsnet as the poster is a known "tedious returning troll" you highlight this and it's my comment that's reported as spam 5 times in minutes and removed. I'd hazard a guess it's the same person with 5 different accounts.

Contact admin and state you've been the victim of malicious spam reports. It takes a while but they do investigate.

Not many people are. There are also some interesting announcements in the site feedback section that have a relatively small number of views. It's a bit of a forgotten corner.

Does the 'spam' thread do anything more (or more quickly) than simply reporting the offending posts?

No. It's sole function is to alert about spammers. Admin do seem to monitor it though as if a report is made quickly a ban can be implemented with just one or two spam reports
