    Thanks for the input.
This week I'm looking at the Magimix and other food processors, along with the Fresh Express and microplane graters, all recommended above.
I find it almost impossible to decide anything, checking the pros and cons before choosing.
    Thanks everyone.

  • I swear by my box grater, it doesn't take long to grate cheese and even better the only power you use is your elbow
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Box graters are fine for cheese - it's the other sides, lemon zest, ginger etc that they don't do so well.

  • I was given 4 packs of extra strong cheese which I must sort out to put in the freezer.

I’m thinking of slicing some of it because grating it by hand will take forever. That way, it should crumble when I defrost it – shouldn’t it?

Yes @3secondmemory, it will definitely be crumbly!  Even if you freeze it in a block and then try to slice it from frozen it's very crumbly but at least if you slice it you should be able to just grab a handful when you want it and use in a sauce or whatever you want it for.

  • VJ's Mum I use a nutmeg grater for things like lemon and ginger

After lots of thought, have decided to opt for the Express grater.  It seems a useful little gadget that won't take up too much room and will grate cheese efficiently.
Have also been looking at the Magimix, and wondering whether to eventually order their food processor to replace my old Kenwood.  There is a very useful video here at John Lewis.  Well impressed!
Although expensive, it would do all that the Kenwood does but take up much less space.
Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate your help.

Is it a Kenwood food mixer with attachments you have or a food processor. I don't think that the Magimix processor will do stuff like cakes/meringues as well as the Kenwood. I have both, a really old Kenwood stand mixer with some attachments and a more modern Magimix.

I think the secret with clean up with graters and stuff is to rinse them off straight away or get them in soak. They are only really hassle if you don't do that and stuff dries on. I don't even put the bits down on the counter when using, even if I don't have time to do a thorough wash, I always rinse stuff off first of all. Now will someone tell my son!  I thought once he was in his own home and cooking (which he does exceptionally well!) he would put water in the mashed potato pan before sitting down for dinner!
