Thanks PipneyJane and monnagran for your input.
The product monnagran used to have sounds like just what I need, or if no longer made, needs something similar to be invented.
It would be good if James Dyson caught sight of this thread. 😀

If I am processing a large quantity of cheese or vegetables, I use my Magimix. But for smaller amounts, I absolute love my electric grater. It’s quick, efficient, and a doddle to clean. I can’t remember what brand it is, possibly Pifco, I’ve had it for several years - it’s a red version of this, and comes with about half a dozen different grating and slicing discs. Love it.

I used to have an electric grater but it disappeared in a move.  I have tried and failed to find one like it.  It was brilliant.  I not only used it for cheese but onions, courgettes and loads of other things went through with ease.  I have a Magimix, but like the Kenwood, if you only want to do a relatively small amount its not worth the faff.
If anyone finds one and it works well, I would love to hear about it.
Lidl / Aldi occasionally do these for about £15. I can't comment on how good they are, but my Lidl electric spiraliser is a worktop staple.

I would suggest putting cheese in a freezer for a few minutes to harden it before grating. Its when its room temperature and soft that it turns to mush.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

Thanks, C_J, that could be just the job. Have been looking at Amazon and other online stores to see what is available. But reviews I read were quite negative for some items, and there didn’t seem to be anything suitable for grating cheeses such as Lancashire, Cheddar, etc, apart from manual graters.
  • I’ve got a Tefal ‘fresh express’ electric grater, and I love it! I’ll buy a big chunk of cheese, grate the whole thing and then freeze it. It’s also great for grating vegetables. It’s got Two different sizes of grater, and a couple of slicing ‘cones’ too.

    Thanks for replying MrsArmitage.
Your recommendation sounds like just what I need.  Have bookmarked on Tefal  website, and will have a look later.
Thanks for your suggestion, really appreciated.
    Fresh Express
  • Im another huge fan of the magimix

Mine sits out on the work top, always pugged in and ready for use so if I need a lot of cheese, Its there. Of course the magimix is a considered purchase but I use it much more then my Kenwood , my Kenwood is relegated to pavlova and bread making

However I also don't bother grating cheese for cheese sauces any more, I just cut a chunk off and then cut that into smaller bits and add, it melts - saves on the washing up :)

For parmesan and nutmeg I have three really small flat graters, small enough they sit in the teaspoon space of my drawer divider ( sorry don't know how to add pictures )

My pleasure! I’ve had mine for a good 10 years, so it’s pretty solid, and I HATE grating stuff with a passion! It’s easy to clean, and you can get spare graters if you need them. I’ve just grated a massive pile of carrots that were down to a few pennies at the supermarket. I’ll bung them in the freezer.

Thank you Apintplease, now undecided whether to opt for the Tefel cheese grater, or seriously consider the Magimix.
My old Kenwood must be 30 (or more) years old and quite large, taking up a lot of room on the worktop.  The Maximix looks much smaller, and looking at the spec.  seems to do all that the Kenwood does.
Although much pricier than the Tefal cheese grinder, wondering now whether to seriously consider replacing my old Kenwood instead.
    Decisions! Decisions!

Tefal Fresh Express! I have the same one as Mrs Armitage, and highly recommend it. I was given it as a gift a few years ago, and my first thought was “oh no, not another gadget to have to find room for and which I’ll never use because I already have a perfectly good food processor” but it really is great (grate - ha!) and I use it a lot.

I put a freezer bag over the end of it, and it grates straight into that which saves on mess and washing up.
