Brought up in a 1 room 1 kitchen flat (25% of a normal double-fronted house) in Forest gate age 0 - 4 . Moved to a 2 bed flat, 9 floors up on a Stratford council estate age 4 - 10, tower was demolished a few years after we moved out. moved to a 2 bed flat Thames street Greenwich council estate( still remember my mum giving me the money and rent book because the rent wagon turned up) age 10- 13. Moved to 1st non-council estate in Ladywell Lewisham age 13 -15. Moved to 2nd non-council estate up nr Grove Park, age 15-19, met girlfriend moved in with her and a few sisters with their boyfriends( my mates before we met the sisters) and her mum, in Eltham age 19-23. Girlfriend and me got our 1st ever place of our own with a 1 bed council flat in Lewisham age 23 - 26. Bought our very first house up in Avery Hill Eltham, age 26-34. Bought our 2nd house down in Bexhill-on-Sea age 34-36, bought, moved To Maidstone and on my 3rd bought house here, age 36 -present. Need to at least buy 1 more time back home in London somewhere, would rather live in a 1bed flat back home than a nice house down here, whats the point in having a nice house if you don't like the location, home is where the heart is.Corduroy pillows are making headlines! Back home in London now after 27years wait! Duvet know it's Christmas, not original, it's a cover.1

3 that I’ve owned, nice little semi, cost me £66,000 in 2000. Sold it 4 years later for double. Then a terrace which I hated with a passion. Great location, awful house. And current one. Served a purpose but I’ll be glad to see the back it. Next one I’m leaving feet first in a wooden overcoat0

Any comments on the right-to-buy scheme of the 1980s onwards ? Was it a good idea or a disaster?
Personally, at the time, I was so happy for my parents and indeed all folk who had their first chance to own ( and a cut-rate price as well ) a house which had seemed impossible all the previous years of their life.
But since then, we have all seen the wider consequences, because nothing replaced the 6 million council houses that have been sold under the right to buy scheme-----and we have also seen the social damage that has been done as a consequence.
It is a very interesting and controversial question, I think.1 -

Owned 1 flat (for 18 years) and this house (2 years).
LIved in 2 houses growing up to 18, Don't even want to try to add up how many places while I was a student including working in hotels during summer periods. I'm sure I'd miss one!1 -

the right to buy scheme gave my uncle and aunt a chance to buy there house which they had lived in for 20 yrs. i remeber it. it had a front garden with a 45% slope toward the road. it was grass when they moved in so they converted it in to a rockery. with steps up the middle up to the front door, and old wooden hand rail to hold on to. I've not been back there for yrs, wonder if it still the same.coachman12 said:Any comments on the right-to-buy scheme of the 1980s onwards ? Was it a good idea or a disaster?

For most houses there's no need to wonder when there's Street View.clive0510 said:

Lived in 5, owned none (currently going through the buying process as FTB). Parents bought our family home under Right to Buy in mid-90s and quite probably without it I wouldn’t have the chance to buy now- they’ve helped us out with our deposit. They were able to pay off their mortgage earlier than the 25 years and due to rising wages/income were also able to make investments and save lots over the years. They still live in their house on an estate that’s about 50/50 owned/still council.Interestingly, my sister refused her Right to Buy and bought a house outright instead as she recognised that times have changed and social housing is so in-demand. She didn’t feel right about continuing to live in her flat when she could buy on her own, so to speak.1
