First Direct are one of those brands (see also Apple) who attract enthusiastic devotees whose subjective opinions aren't always supported by objective facts!

I often read on here about how a member finds a particular bank's online banking poor and I have used the same service and find it good. It all depends on criteria used to come up with an opinion. I really like Metro Bank's mobile app, for example. It is clear and lets you do what you need to do without ceremony. It also lets you see pending transactions on a separate screen, which I much prefer to having them mixed up with cleared transactions like with Starling, Monzo or Virgin Money. The Virgin Money app has surely been designed by Fisher-Price and the Barclays mobile app is probably the very worst I've used - it is so heavily over engineered it's painful. I switched in and out within a couple of weeks because or it. The Co-operative Bank's app is good, but could do with being moved down a few pixels on iPhones with a notch as the app menu button touches the battery indicator in the status bar. I'm not sure why it is 19th in the list though.

Ultimately, make a list of what you need from a mobile app and tick each item on your list for each app you use and you'll pretty much find the vast majority of apps let you do what you need to do. There are a couple of things which don't appear in all apps, like the ability to pause a card, or pay in a cheque, but generally they're a very similar bunch.
