    Slow down over them, then...

There are legal requirements for the size of traffic calming measures that can be installed. So long as they're within those, they are perfectly acceptable.

Remember - local authorities are very cash-strapped, and traffic calming measures such as humps are far less expensive to install, operate, and maintain than the others you mention.
    Thanks for the helpful reply

When speed bumps started to infest this area 30-odd years ago, I was advised to drive at a steady 20. That enables you to take the bumps safely, and avoids unnecessary brake wear and fuel use between them.
I have (generally) followed that advice and had no damage to any of my. 20-odd cars. Most people around also seem to take the bumps at 20ish - I drove behind someone yesterday who braked to a crawl for every one, and it was very unusual. And very irritating.
NB Speed bumps on private roads, car parks etc. are a different story entirely.
Thanks - Yes I've been told by the mechanic as well as others that it's the CV's that it damages the most as its affecting how often they move, which is the case whether you slow down or not.

    Cobblers.

CV joints change angle all the time - they're designed to. The shaft is never totally fully aligned with the stub, let alone considering steering movement, as well as suspension travel.

And suspension moves all the time while driving on anything other than a mirror-smooth surface. It's kinda the whole job of it.

    30 years
    20 cars
That means a car only last 18 months on average.  Maybe slowing down for speed humps a car will be able to be eeked out to last a little longer?

You're assuming one car at a time.

Yes, it is very difficult to drive two cars over a speed bump at the same time.  Except for Inspector Gadget :)

Somehow, I think you know I meant ownership of two or more cars at a time...

Hmmm, but it still means a car lasts on 18 months on average.
Unless, they are special and treasured cars and @Car_54 is, in fact, Lord Montagu...

    No, it doesn't.

He may have had one car at a time for 1.5yrs each on average...
Or he may have had two cars at a time for 3yrs each.
Or three at a time for 4.5yrs each.
    Or four for 6yrs.
