I’ve just spoken to someone at foresters and they said if it was awarded by mistake because of his DOB then Halifax may have put it into a different savings scheme instead of the CTF so I’m to ring Halifax and ask them to do a search on his name and see if they can locate it

It would be rather odd though if a reputable  financial institution were to permit the deposit of a voucher known to be issued in error?

Again!! I’ve no idea.. I’m just trying to get to the bottom of it, that’s all he could suggest! My only other option is to write to the savings department at the tax office. I was trying to avoid having to do that but if all else fails I shall write it them.

I meant he was awarded around £280 odd and his brother was a little less maybe around £260-£270

But these amounts don't tally with the scheme?

In 2005 (when you received them presumably) the vouchers were for £250 or £500 (see above).

Does Foresters have your second son's CTF?

  • @xylophone I will dig out the letter later on when I’m home, I have the top of the letter that the cheque was attached to. Because it was so long ago I can’t remember the exact amount but I know my 18yr old received more than my 16yr old. All he said is that the took over the CTF for Halifax, so they could’ve put it into a Halifax savings or isa and it I ring them they will be able to tell me what happened to the cheque. Even if I’m told it was destroyed because it was sent in error I’ll be ok with that, but if not and my son has money sat in an account somewhere then I’ll try all I can to get him what he was awarded. Please believe me this is not me making it up or trying to get money off the government, honestly I wouldn’t waste my time. I’d forgotten all about them until a family member reminded me (she was there when I took them to the bank) so it prompted me to dig out the letters and check, I’ve rang tax credits too but because the scheme no longer runs then there is no office/person to help with my enquiry ☺️

I certainly didn't think that you were!

It just seems that there is some confusion somewhere.

Also, you mention "cheque" - apparently, the payment was in the form of a voucher?

Did Foresters confirm that they hold your younger child's account?

  • @xylophone cheque/voucher looked a little like a giro, it was attached to the bottom of the letter that explains what it is for, has CTF written at the top, if my memory serves me right it has pictures of building blocks at the top. I know I have them filed away so I will dig them out later and maybe just write to the savings dept at tax credits in the hope they can help me. I didn’t ask them about my other sons. I can sort that out when I have dealt with this. Plus his DOB is 2004 so will be able to trace that on the gov.uk website

My son's both had "odd" amounts as well, with my older son getting slightly more than my younger son. Neither received exactly £250. I believe that it was to make up for lost interest due to the length of time it took the government to get the vouchers out for the children.

Yes I know my sons had odd amounts and was both different, my older son got more than my younger son and it was something to do with the dates why they got what they did.
  • I honestly don’t understand why some people think I’d be lying about this? I mean.. what would I gain from making it up? If it was made up it would be a massive waste of my time... both of my sons received a letter with 2 different amounts of money. Why my eldest received one I do not know as I don’t work for the tax credits. I just took both of them to the bank of choice and deposited them. I did them both at the same time
