I'm not a big phone user, especially now working from home is becoming more common. A sim only deal would still mean I have to buy a phone up front, whereas the contract has a phone included.0

What do you mean by wifi calling and 4g? I use Whatsapp most days and have used it from USA and monthly to NZ and/or Messenger.
An example would be having no signal and your doctor or bank phones you, WhatsApp isn't going to ring, is it? But if you are using VoWiFi and your phone is connected to WiFi it will ring just like it would if you had a mobile signal.====1
